Nikhil Prabhu Unveils the Winning Strategy of Punjab FC, Emphasizes Collective Strength

New Delhi, Dec 1 (NationPress) Punjab FC has made an impressive start under the guidance of their new head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis. The team currently holds the fourth position in the ISL table and has been one of the toughest competitors in their second season in the league.
In a candid discussion with IANS, defensive midfielder Nikhil Prabhu shared insights about the team's strong start this season, his aspirations for the national team, and more.
IANS: What notable changes have occurred this season under head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis?
NP: The coach has entrusted me with significant responsibilities in a pivotal role within the squad. These responsibilities are greatly aiding my development. I thrive on challenges like engaging in aerial duels, initiating plays from the back, and being crucial during transitions. This has provided me with ample opportunities to grow.
As a collective, we prioritize building from the back; the more we possess the ball, the less we need to defend. We are experimenting with new strategies in training and focusing on maintaining possession, which has been a significant improvement from last year. Previously, we relied on direct football, but this year, we play according to our style, compelling our opponents to adjust to us.
IANS: How significant was the 3-0 victory over the defending ISL Cup champions Mumbai City FC?
NP: That win was crucial, especially after suffering defeats in our last two matches, including a loss to FC Goa before the international break and another against NorthEast post-break. It was vital for the team's morale because consecutive losses can be mentally draining. While hard work is essential, we understand that wins will come with effort.
Looking ahead is crucial. Personally, it was significant for me since it was a challenging match, but I found it easier with my parents cheering for me from the stands. As a son, fulfilling the dream of making my parents proud was a moment I cherished, especially since they have sacrificed so much for my success.
IANS: Recently, a video surfaced of Dimperis telling the team, 'You are the best.' How does that influence the team?
NP: The coach consistently urges us to believe in ourselves and reinforces that we should not conform to our opponents; instead, they must adapt to us. He emphasizes that we are the best team in the league, which serves as a tremendous source of motivation. Individually, we may have our weaknesses, but as a unit, we are exceptionally strong.
The team is our strength; unity is our strength. A mistake by one player affects the entire squad, which is why the coach emphasizes that we are the best team. He never singles out an individual as the best player.
IANS: Do you think you will receive a call-up to the national team soon?
NP: I’m not focusing on that right now; my priority is the club. If we finish in the top two, I believe I will have greater visibility. My growth is tied to the club's success. With the next window in March approaching, I’m concentrating on club performance.
It ultimately depends on the coach. I’ve worked under Manolo for over a year and a half, and he is pleased with my development. I’m committed to putting forth my best efforts, and I trust the coach to make the right decisions.
IANS: You transitioned from being a central defender to a defensive midfielder last season. How was that transition?
NP: I previously played as a centre-back, and the coach assisted me immensely in evolving into a CDM. Now, my aggression as a CDM is evident; previously, as a centre-back, I couldn’t engage in tackles or duels with the same intensity. Now, I’m more assertive in breaking up plays and initiating attacks from the back. With sustained hard work, I believe I can become one of the best in the league.
