Punjab FC Aims to Revive Their Season Against NorthEast United

Guwahati, Jan 9 (NationPress) Punjab FC is determined to shake off their recent slump as they prepare to face NorthEast United FC in an Indian Super League clash on Saturday at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium.

A victory would elevate Punjab, currently sitting on 18 points, to within just one point of the playoff spots, while NorthEast United, with 22 points, aims to secure a win to maintain their playoff standing.

Addressing the team's recent performance, PFC's head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis stated, “Certainly, when a team is not achieving the expected results, such as losing four consecutive matches, it compels us to enhance our game. There are numerous factors contributing to these outcomes, all of which we have acknowledged and will rectify in tomorrow's match. Although we have conceded a significant number of goals in recent games due to various issues, we still boast one of the best defensive records of the season.”

“We will have our full squad available tomorrow as all players have returned from injuries and suspensions. They may need a few matches to regain their optimal condition,” the coach remarked regarding the availability of some key players who missed recent games.

When asked about his opposition and NorthEast’s coach, Dilmperis said, “I hold Juan Pedro Benali in high regard; he is an exceptional coach who operates his team like a well-oiled machine. They maximize every moment in attack and possess a solid defense. We will not focus on any single player tomorrow, as they have eleven players on the field. We have devised our strategies and will aim to exploit their weaknesses to achieve a favorable outcome.”

Punjab FC recently lost to Kerala Blasters by a narrow margin at home, while NorthEast United played to a goalless draw against newcomers Mohammedan SC in Guwahati.

The return of key attacking players Luka Majcen, Pulga Vidal, and Filip Mrzljak, alongside defender Ivan Novoselec, will strengthen Punjab FC.

During the pre-match press conference, defender Pramveer Singh, who made history as the youngest player to start an ISL match, shared, “The coach has placed his faith in me to participate in crucial matches for the team. I don't experience much pressure due to my age; this is an incredible learning experience for me. The coach and my senior teammates have been supportive from the start, and I aim to keep performing well and aiding the team. The morale in the dressing room is high, and we are confident about securing a win tomorrow.”

In their previous clash, NorthEast United triumphed over Punjab FC with a score of 2-1 in a thrilling match in New Delhi. Last season, Punjab FC narrowly defeated NorthEast United by a single goal at the same venue, while their other encounter in New Delhi ended in a 1-1 tie.

Punjab FC needs nothing less than a victory to turn their season around, while NorthEast seeks to uphold their position in the playoff standings.
