New Delhi, Dec 22 (NationPress) New Zealand surged to the second position on the ICC World Test Championship standings following an impressive 323-run triumph over the West Indies in the final Test match held at Mount Maunganui.
This remarkable win elevated New Zealand above South Africa, leaving only Australia ahead of them in the WTC rankings.
New Zealand’s upcoming challenge is a three-match World Test Championship series against England, set to commence in the middle of next year.
On the other hand, the West Indies remain in ninth place on the table and are set to play at home next year against Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
The Black Caps secured their victory midway through the final session at Bay Oval, with left-arm pacer Jacob Duffy claiming the last wicket to conclude the match. This performance capped off a stellar series for Duffy, who was named Player of the Series.
Duffy excelled as the leading bowler in the West Indies’ second innings, achieving figures of 5/42 while the visitors were dismissed for 138, chasing a formidable target of 462. He concludes the series with 23 wickets, playing a pivotal role in New Zealand’s 2-0 series victory and a robust start to their World Test Championship campaign.
Additionally, the left-armer broke a long-standing national milestone, surpassing Richard Hadlee’s record for the most wickets taken by a New Zealander in a calendar year. His third five-wicket haul of the series brought his total beyond Hadlee’s previous benchmark of 80.
“I spotted that list (most wickets in a calendar year) at lunchtime, and it featured some remarkable names. Being alongside those names is something special,” Duffy remarked.
New Zealand’s bowlers were supported by an extraordinary batting display, led by openers Devon Conway and captain Tom Latham. The duo made history, becoming the first opening partnership in Test cricket to each score two centuries in the same match.
Conway’s performances were particularly noteworthy, with scores of 227 and 100 making him the first New Zealander, and only the 10th player in history, to achieve both a double century and a century in a single Test. He was honored with the Player of the Match award.
“I don’t think it’s fully registered yet. It will take some time for me to process what transpired in this Test match. However, I’m really happy about the win,” Conway stated.
