Wellington, Dec 12 (NationPress) New Zealand has significantly improved their chances of reaching the ICC World Test Championship Final for a second time by achieving a decisive nine-wicket victory against the West Indies in the second Test held in Wellington on Friday.
This triumph awarded New Zealand 12 crucial World Test Championship points, enabling the 2021 champions to surpass both Pakistan and India, and join Sri Lanka in the third position on the table.
With a win-loss percentage of 66.67, New Zealand is now placed behind only the leaders Australia (100 percent) and second-placed South Africa (75 percent).
On the third day at the Basin Reserve, New Zealand's bowlers showcased their skills, with Jacob Duffy claiming a remarkable five-wicket haul, helping to dismiss the West Indies for a mere 128 runs in their second innings.
This left New Zealand needing just 56 runs to secure victory and a 1-0 lead in the series. Devon Conway (28 not out) and Kane Williamson (16 not out) successfully led the team to victory following the early dismissal of captain Tom Latham for nine runs.
Reflecting on the win, New Zealand captain Latham stated, "We gradually improved throughout the match. It took us some time to get into the game on day one, likely due to some fatigue from the first Test. However, we progressively got better and better.
"In the second innings, our bowling was exceptional, and we made slight adjustments to our strategy as needed."
This victory marks New Zealand's first in the 2025–27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. In contrast, the West Indies have now lost six out of their seven matches in this cycle and remain without a win.
The third Test between New Zealand and the West Indies is scheduled to begin in Mount Maunganui on December 18.
