Olympic Gold Medalist Erica Wiebe to Host Training Camp for Female Wrestlers in India

Located in Bellary (Karnataka), on January 6 (NationPress), the Olympic gold medallist and renowned Canadian wrestling figure, Erica Wiebe, is scheduled to lead a training camp for female wrestlers from India at the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS) in Vijayanagar this month. This initiative is part of the second installment of the IIS Excellence Accelerator.

This masterclass, which is a pioneering effort, aims to introduce world-class expertise to the IIS United World Wrestling (UWW) International Women’s Wrestling Camp. It follows the successful inaugural edition featuring the Georgian judo icon Lasha Shavdatuashvili.

During her remarkable 2014 season, Wiebe achieved an astounding feat by winning every tournament she entered, resulting in a streak of 36 consecutive victories. She captured gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the 75kg Freestyle category and added another gold in 2018. Furthermore, she clinched the prestigious gold medal at the Rio Olympics in the summer of 2016. After her success in Rio, she took on the role of captain for the Mumbai Maharathi in the inaugural Indian Pro Wrestling League.

“We are thrilled to welcome Erica to IIS. The vision behind this masterclass is to provide our young athletes with exposure to Olympic champions and insights into what it takes to achieve Olympic Gold,” expressed Manisha Malhotra, President of IIS, in a statement on Monday.

Wiebe, who stands as the second Canadian woman to secure Olympic gold, will share her mastery of techniques and invaluable experiences with IIS female wrestlers, along with participants from over eight different nations involved in the IIS UWW International Women’s Wrestling Camp.

The Excellence Accelerator series featuring Erica Wiebe presents a distinctive chance for emerging Indian wrestlers to engage with some of the foremost talents globally, fostering an environment of cross-cultural learning and collaboration, as noted in the release.

“Erica serves not only as an excellent ambassador for the sport but also holds an MBA and works with the Canadian Olympic Committee. Our athletes must grasp how they can continue to contribute to the sport beyond their athletic careers. We aim to cultivate them into better individuals first, and this experience will provide them significant insights into life after sports,” Malhotra added.

Wiebe’s visit signifies a pivotal moment for the Indian wrestling community and IIS’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of female wrestlers.
