Mumbai, April 16 (NationPress) Prabhsimran Singh and Shreyas Iyer showcased remarkable form, both scoring their second consecutive half-centuries and forging an impressive 139-run partnership for the third wicket, leading the Punjab Kings to a dominant seven-wicket victory over the Mumbai Indians in Match 24 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.

Iyer made a strategic decision to put Mumbai Indians to bat first on a pitch with a subtle grass covering that favored fast bowlers. With Rohit Sharma sidelined due to a hamstring injury sustained in the previous match, Quinton de Kock took charge as the opener, delivering a stellar performance with 112 not out off 60 balls. His efforts, along with Naman Dhir's solid 50 from 31 balls, helped Mumbai reach a total of 195/6 after a rocky start where they found themselves at 12/2 in the third over.

Despite Mumbai's strong batting, it was Prabhsimran and Iyer who stole the show with their stellar chase. Prabhsimran scored an impressive 80 not out off 39 balls while Iyer contributed 66 off 35, leading PBKS to a total of 198/3 in just 16.3 overs.

This victory not only marked Prabhsimran's second fifty in IPL 2026 but also Iyer's third consecutive half-century, with this performance being particularly gratifying for him as it took place at his home ground against a team featuring three members of the T20 World Cup-winning Indian side, from which he had been overlooked.

With this triumph, PBKS ascended to the top of the points table with nine points, while the Mumbai Indians lingered at two points from just one win amidst four losses.

While chasing a challenging target of 196, the Punjab Kings initially faced some trouble with Priyansh Arya (15) and Cooper Connolly (17) contributing to a score of 45 runs before Impact Substitute AM Ghazanfar dismissed both, igniting hopes for Mumbai.

However, the partnership between Prabhsimran and Iyer proved crucial as they expertly navigated the chase. Prabhsimran exhibited superb form, displaying a variety of shots and timing the ball impeccably, while also benefiting from an early dropped catch by Jasprit Bumrah off Hardik Pandya.

Prabhsimran began aggressively, hitting consecutive boundaries off Chahar in the first over and followed it up with more boundaries to reach his fifty in just 23 balls, propelling PBKS closer to their target.

Iyer, who made a sensational catch to dismiss his opposite number, supported Prabhsimran effectively and accelerated towards the end of his innings, reaching his half-century in 31 balls with a flurry of boundaries.

With PBKS requiring 35 runs from the last 36 deliveries, Iyer hit Bumrah for multiple boundaries and struck Shardul Thakur for back-to-back sixes in the 16th over. Although he was eventually dismissed after scoring 66 off 35 balls, the match was effectively sealed by then.

Earlier, Mumbai's innings were largely bolstered by De Kock's impressive century, as they aimed for a total exceeding 200 before PBKS curtailed their scoring opportunities.

With Rohit Sharma missing due to injury, the Mumbai Indians had a shaky start, plummeting to 12/2, thanks to Arshdeep Singh's excellent bowling that dismissed both Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav for ducks.

De Kock then took charge of the innings, flourishing alongside Naman Dhir and capitalizing on the short boundaries to propel the score. The seasoned South African, who had missed the first four matches, delivered an outstanding performance, scoring a century off just 53 balls, featuring seven fours and seven sixes.

De Kock was particularly aggressive against Yuzi Chahal, making the most of a missed run-out opportunity by Shreyas Iyer. Naman Dhir, promoted to No. 4, also capitalized on his chance, scoring a half-century and contributing significantly to the partnership as they raced to 100 runs.

Despite losing skipper Hardik Pandya to a remarkable catch by Iyer, who executed a spectacular play, Mumbai struggled with their fielding, dropping three crucial catches, which ultimately hampered their performance.
