New Delhi, June 1 (NationPress) As the IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 approaches, featuring Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians at the Narendra Modi Stadium this Sunday, former Indian pacer Varun Aaron suggests that PBKS could hold a slight edge in Ahmedabad thanks to the pitch conditions, which favor their top-order batsmen.
"I believe the Ahmedabad pitch will be advantageous for Punjab. While it benefits both teams, it leans more towards Punjab due to their reliance on strong openers. It's beneficial for them to have qualified in the top two, as their young Indian players have experienced a high-pressure knockout match. They now understand what is required in such scenarios," Aaron stated during his appearance on ESPNcricinfo's Time Out show.
"Ricky Ponting's guidance will be crucial as they prepare to reset for this match. As Shreyas Iyer mentioned after Qualifier 1, they might have lost a battle but the war is still on," he added.
In contrast, former Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Tom Moody advised PBKS to quickly move past their previous defeat, where they were bowled out for a mere 101 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Qualifier 1 in New Chandigarh. He encouraged them to concentrate on the strengths that established them as one of the top teams this season. Acknowledging that MI are the "definite favorites" going into this match, he remarked that "Punjab cannot be written off," since they have consistently exceeded expectations.
MI secured their spot in Qualifier 2 after defeating Gujarat Titans (GT) in New Chandigarh, scoring an impressive 228 for 5.
"They've had some time to set aside their disappointment. Now, they must refocus on what has made them a formidable side this year. Their uncapped players have performed remarkably well," noted Moody.
"Confidence is key. If they maintain that on a good batting surface, they will surely be competitive. However, Mumbai will arrive in peak form following their strong performance in Chandigarh, having shed the negative aspects of their season, including early losses and individual struggles. They excel at critical moments," he continued.
Aaron stressed the significance of establishing an early advantage in this high-stakes knockout match. He concurred with Moody that batting first would be a wiser strategy, especially for a team like PBKS that features a relatively inexperienced batting lineup.
"Punjab would benefit greatly from setting the tone, particularly in a knockout game. I completely agree with Tom: it’s always advantageous to set a target. Their batting unit is good but inexperienced. In such matches, pressure can be overwhelming. Setting a target alleviates some of that pressure, allowing the bowlers to take charge," Aaron concluded.
