Charleston, April 6 (NationPress) Top seed Jessica Pegula triumphed over the unexpected finalist Yuliia Starodubtseva from Ukraine with a score of 6-2, 6-2, marking her as the first player to successfully defend the Charleston Open title on Daniel Island since Serena Williams did so in 2012-2013.
This victory represents Pegula's second title in 2026, following her WTA 1000 win in Dubai earlier in February, and it is the 11th singles title in her career. She now holds an 11-11 record in WTA singles finals and is leading the WTA Tour with 24 wins this season.
“This year and last year were quite challenging,” remarked Pegula, who dedicated over 13 hours on the court this week with both singles and doubles matches. “Often, after winning a tournament, you might romanticize the experience, thinking it was easy.
