Como (Italy), May 20 (NationPress) - The former Spanish international and Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has officially declared his retirement from professional football.

The 42-year-old goalkeeper, who has been playing for Como in Serie A, will conclude his career after their match against Inter Milan this Friday. This season, he has appeared in just 12 matches for the team managed by Cesc Fabregas.

Reina dedicated nearly a decade to Liverpool after joining from Villarreal in 2005. He was signed by Rafael Benitez shortly after the club's UEFA Champions League victory the previous year and served as the primary goalkeeper for eight consecutive seasons.

During his first year, he played a pivotal role in helping the Reds secure the FA Cup, making three crucial saves in a penalty shootout against West Ham United after the match ended in a 3-3 draw.

The former Barcelona keeper was also part of the squad that reached another UEFA Champions League final in 2007, where Liverpool faced defeat to AC Milan in Athens.

Reina captured the Premier League Golden Glove award for the most clean sheets for three consecutive seasons from 2005 to 2008.

He retained his position even as new managers replaced Benitez, including Roy Hodgson, Kenny Dalglish—under whom he won a League Cup medal—and Brendan Rodgers.

However, after the arrival of Simon Mignolet, Reina spent the 2013-14 season on loan at Napoli.

In the summer of 2014, he bid farewell to Anfield for good by transferring to Bayern Munich. Over his career, he made 394 appearances for the Reds, alongside 191 appearances for Villarreal across two stints and 36 appearances for the Spanish national team since his debut in 2005.

A World Cup champion and two-time European Championship victor with Spain, Reina also had stints at Napoli, AC Milan, Aston Villa, SS Lazio, Villarreal, and most recently, Como.

Point of View

I can confidently say that Pepe Reina's retirement marks the end of an era in football. His contributions to both club and country are immense, and his legacy will certainly influence future generations of goalkeepers. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
