Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 14 (NationPress) In a significant move ahead of the 19th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), former England cricket star Kevin Pietersen has announced his resignation as the mentor for Delhi Capitals. He cited the inability to dedicate the necessary time for the role. The 45-year-old cricketer confirmed he will return to the commentary booth during the lucrative tournament.
Pietersen was appointed to this position in February of last year for the 2025 season, collaborating closely with the coaching team, which included Director of Cricket Venugopal Rao, Head Coach Hemang Badani, Assistant Coach Matthew Mott, and Bowling Coach Munaf Patel.
He took to X to inform his followers about the decision, stating, "I will not be able to fulfill the role of mentor for Delhi Capitals this IPL season. I cannot commit to the time expected for this position. Best of luck to all players this season! I look forward to being back in the commentary box! IPL is the premier league worldwide, and I can't wait to see everyone soon!"
With an impressive record of participating in 200 T20 matches and scoring 5,695 runs, Pietersen has played in 36 IPL games, accumulating 1,001 runs with teams such as Delhi Daredevils, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Pune. The cricketer, born in South Africa, captained England from 2008 to 2009 and was named Player of the Series at the 2010 ICC T20 World Cup, a key factor in England securing their first ICC title.
Throughout his illustrious international career, Pietersen has played 104 Test matches, amassing 8,181 runs, and participated in 136 ODIs, scoring a total of 4,440 runs.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently revealed the schedule for the initial phase of IPL 2026, which will run from March 28 to April 12, 2026.
"As three states are set to hold State Assembly elections during this timeframe, the complete tournament schedule will be disclosed after the election dates are confirmed," the BCCI stated.
The 19th edition of the world's largest T20 league will kick off with the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) facing off against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
A total of 20 matches are scheduled to take place across 10 venues: Bengaluru, Mumbai, Guwahati, New Chandigarh, Lucknow, Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad.
