Indian Grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa claimed his first-ever Rapid & Blitz title at the 2026 Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz on 8 August, topping an elite field to win $50,000 and vault into the live top 10 of the world rapid rankings for the first time in his career. The tournament served as the first U.S. leg of the Grand Chess Tour (GCT).

How Praggnanandhaa Built the Title

The Indian GM set the tone early, dominating the rapid section with 12 out of 18 points — a commanding performance that put him clear of the field before the blitz rounds even began. He then held his nerve in the blitz to seal the overall title, making him the only player to top both sections independently.

'I was just trying to stay calm and play. I wanted to win the Rapid and Blitz separately, which I think I managed, so that's good,' Praggnanandhaa said after his victory. 'Last year, the Rapid & Blitz put me in a situation where I had to perform in the Sinquefield Cup, but this time the Rapid & Blitz has helped me go into the 2026 Sinquefield Cup with a good score, so I'm happy that I managed to improve in that area.'

Final Standings and Prize Money

Uzbekistan's GM Javokhir Sindarov held the runner-up position throughout the week to finish second and earn $40,000. American grandmaster GM Wesley So placed third, taking home $30,000. GM Levon Aronian finished fourth for $20,000, while GM Fabiano Caruana, GM Jorden Van Foreest, and GM Leinier Dominguez shared fifth place at $12,000 each.

Grand Chess Tour Standings and What's Next

The victory moved Praggnanandhaa to second place in the overall Grand Chess Tour standings with 24.5 points, just behind GM Fabiano Caruana (25 points, $137,833). GM Wesley So sits third on 23.5 points, followed by GM Vincent Keymer on 21 points.

The circuit now moves to the 2026 Sinquefield Cup, running from 10 to 19 August at the Saint Louis Chess Club, with a total prize fund of $475,000. The classical-format event is the final regular-season stop of the GCT and the last opportunity for players to secure a top-four finish and qualify for the GCT Finals. The field will include wildcard GM Levon Aronian and GM Sam Sevian, who replaced GM Alireza Firouzja after the latter withdrew late last month.
