New Delhi, May 3 (NationPress) Kagiso Rabada, the leading fast bowler from South Africa, has announced that he is currently facing a provisional suspension from all competitive cricket after testing positive for a prohibited substance, identified as a recreational drug. Rabada participated in two matches for the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 before unexpectedly returning home due to personal matters.

“As reported, I recently left the IPL and returned to South Africa for personal reasons. This was a result of an adverse analytical finding related to the use of a recreational drug,” stated Rabada.

“I sincerely apologize to everyone I have disappointed. I will never take the honor of playing cricket for granted. This opportunity is much more significant than my individual ambitions. I am currently under a provisional suspension and eagerly anticipate my return to the sport I cherish,” Rabada conveyed in a statement released by the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) on Saturday.

This disclosure raises doubts about Rabada's ability to rejoin the GT for the remainder of their IPL 2025 season. It remains unclear whether the substance he tested positive for was performance-enhancing and if the test was conducted during or outside of competition. Additionally, it is uncertain whether he failed the dope test during the IPL or prior.

“I could not have navigated this situation alone. I am grateful to my agent, Cricket South Africa (CSA), and the Gujarat Titans for their unwavering support. I would also like to extend my gratitude to SACA and my legal team for their guidance,” Rabada added.

“Most importantly, I want to thank my friends and family for their understanding and love. This incident will not define my future. I will continue to work diligently and play with the passion and commitment that I have always shown,” he remarked.

The 29-year-old has represented South Africa in 70 Tests, 106 One-Day Internationals, and 65 T20 Internationals. Earlier this year, he made a comeback from an injury.
