Mount Maunganui, Oct 1 (NationPress) Rachin Ravindra has been declared unavailable for the three-match T20I series against Australia, with Jimmy Neesham stepping in as his replacement, as per a statement from New Zealand Cricket on Tuesday.
Ravindra sustained a facial laceration that required stitches after colliding with a boundary hoarding during a fielding session at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.
New Zealand coach Rob Walter expressed disappointment over Ravindra's absence, stating, "He suffered a significant laceration to his upper lip and nose, necessitating specialized stitching and a recovery period."
“Rachin is a crucial player for our team, but his health comes first. The decision was made to send him home to recuperate, aiming for his return for the England series in two weeks," he added.
This marks Ravindra's second facial injury in 2025. Earlier in the year, he was hit on the forehead while attempting a catch during a tri-series game against South Africa in Lahore, which kept him out of the remainder of the series and New Zealand's opening Champions Trophy match against Pakistan.
Neesham, who has played 84 T20Is and was part of the New Zealand team in Zimbabwe in July, has joined the squad in Tauranga.
Walter commented on Neesham’s inclusion, saying, "We’re fortunate to bring in Jimmy, who offers vast experience and all-round skills. It’s set to be an exciting night at Bay Oval, and we’re eager to kick off the Chappell-Hadlee series."
