Lahore, Feb 9 (NationPress) New Zealand batter Ravindra was compelled to leave the field after being struck on the forehead by the ball while attempting to catch it during the 38th over of their match against Pakistan in the ODI tri-series. The subpar quality of the floodlights at Gaddafi Stadium is being cited as a factor for this alarming injury, which may affect Ravindra's participation in the series.
"Ravindra has suffered a laceration to his forehead, which has been treated at the venue, but he is otherwise in good condition. He successfully passed his initial HIA and will be monitored under the HIA protocols," the New Zealand Cricket stated in their announcement on Saturday.
The incident occurred during the 38th over when Khushdil Shah struck a shot towards Rachin Ravindra at deep backward square leg. The ball was traveling rapidly, and Ravindra positioned himself to catch it, but unfortunately, he lost sight of the ball due to the inadequate lighting, resulting in the ball hitting his face. Ravindra collapsed immediately as blood streamed from his injury.
The medical team from New Zealand swiftly took Ravindra off the field and he was later transported for further treatment.
In the end, Pakistan suffered a defeat in their opening match of the tri-series by 78 runs, getting bowled out for 252 in 47.5 overs while chasing a challenging target set by New Zealand, who posted 330/6 in 50 overs, thanks to remarkable middle-order performances from Glenn Phillips, who scored an unbeaten 106 off 74 balls, and Kane Williamson, who added 58 runs.
Before his injury, Ravindra had made a modest contribution of 25 runs off 19 balls before being caught and bowled by Abrar Ahmed.
However, it was the injury in the latter half of the match that sparked outrage among fans, who blamed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the inadequate lighting that seemed hastily arranged in preparation for the Champions Trophy.
"The PCB needs to upgrade the lighting quality at the ground. Rachin Ravindra misjudged the ball because of the poor lights and received a severe blow near his eye. Wishing him a swift recovery..." commented a fan on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Another fan echoed similar sentiments, stating, "PCB must enhance the light quality at the ground. Rachin Ravindra misjudged the ball under inadequate lights and took a harsh hit near the eye. Hope he recovers soon."
Many fans attributed Ravindra's injury to the deficient floodlights. "Rachin Ravindra is an exceptional fielder, yet he couldn't see the ball while catching? The lighting at Gaddafi Stadium is terrible," wrote another supporter.
One fan even criticized the ICC for permitting the PCB to host an international match with such poor lighting conditions. "How could @ICC allow Pakistan's ground to host international matches? ICC must prioritize players' safety, and if Pakistan can't provide it, move the CHAMPIONS TROPHY to Dubai. Sending prayers for Rachin Ravindra," another fan remarked.
