Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Wellington, March 22 (NationPress) New Zealand faces another challenge before the fourth T20I against South Africa, as Tom Latham has been sidelined due to an injury, according to NZC's announcement on Sunday.
In his place, Tom Blundell has been called up to the squad, making his return to T20I cricket for the first time since April 2025 for the match in Wellington.
Latham suffered a thumb injury inflicted by South African fast bowler Nqobani Mokoena during the third T20I at Eden Park on Friday. Despite the setback, he continued to bat and scored an impressive unbeaten 63, leading New Zealand to a convincing eight-wicket win.
Following the match, medical personnel promptly assessed Latham's thumb. He was subsequently flown to Christchurch for further scans the next day. His participation in the fifth T20I will hinge on these results.
“Tom Latham has been ruled out of the fourth T20I against South Africa starting this Sunday, March 22, in Wellington. Latham was struck on the thumb by South African fast-bowler Nqobani Mokoena during the third T20I at Eden Park on Friday night. Wellington Firebirds wicketkeeper Tom Blundell joins the squad as batting and wicketkeeping cover,” NZC stated in a post on X.
With Latham unavailable, James Neesham will take over as captain. This marks the first time in his ten-year international career that the all-rounder will lead New Zealand in T20Is, becoming the nation's 12th player to do so.
“All-rounder James Neesham will captain the BLACKCAPS for the first time this evening in the fourth KFC T20I against South Africa. Neesham is now the 12th player to lead the BLACKCAPS in T20Is,” the board noted in a separate X announcement.
Earlier in the series, Ish Sodhi and Bevon Jacobs were also ruled out due to a broken thumb and a left knee injury, respectively. Currently, the five-match series stands at 2-1 in favor of the home team.
