Tom Latham, New Zealand Test Captain, Signs with Warwickshire for 2025 Season

Birmingham, Nov 28 (NationPress) Warwickshire has officially announced the signing of Tom Latham, the captain of the New Zealand Test team and an accomplished opening batter, for the 2025 season. This announcement was made on Thursday. Latham recently led New Zealand to a remarkable 3-0 Test series victory over India in his inaugural series as captain, and he has committed to a one-year contract to participate in all formats at Edgbaston. The 32-year-old has been a crucial part of the Blackcaps’ batting lineup for the past decade, boasting an average of 38.78 across 85 Tests and accumulating over 250 international caps.
With significant experience in First Class cricket, Latham has played more than 160 red ball matches at an impressive average of 42.22, including 26 centuries.
Expressing his excitement, Latham stated, “Warwickshire is a Club with a great history and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to represent them. I’ve played at Edgbaston before and know how much the fans get behind the team there. It’s one of my favourite venues, so I’m excited to call it my home ground for the 2025 season.”
“It’ll also be nice to bring the family to Birmingham and spend some time exploring the city. I’d love nothing more than to help the Bears lift a trophy. I’m looking forward to the whole experience,” he added.
Latham made his international debut at the young age of 19. In December 2018, he made headlines by scoring 264 not out against Sri Lanka, setting a Test record for the highest score by an opener while carrying their bat.
Gavin Larsen, Warwickshire's Performance Director, expressed his delight in securing one of the leading batters in world cricket as the Bears' first overseas signing for 2025. “We’ve been working behind the scenes to bring in someone to strengthen our top order, someone with proven ability and experience. Tom fits the bill ideally, and it’s a real pleasure to have secured him for the 2025 season,” he stated.
“The New Zealand team has limited conflict with our domestic cricket calendar next season. In this modern cricket world, it’s rare to have a player of Tom’s quality and experience agree to join and be available for an entire season.
“Known primarily for his red ball career, Tom has also played over 100 T20 matches, averaging 30 with a Strike Rate of 131. He is an exceedingly clever T20 player with a comprehensive range of strokes, making him a valuable asset for our Blast campaign. Furthermore, he will contribute experience and leadership to our squad, and his impact on our batting group, particularly on our younger players, will be invaluable,” added Larsen.
