New Delhi, May 22 (NationPress) Olympian Raiza Dhillon showcased remarkable skill amidst challenging and unpredictable conditions, clinching a silver medal in the women’s skeet event at the ongoing International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Cup taking place in Suhl, Germany, on Thursday.
The talented Indian shooter managed to hit 51 out of 60 targets in the final, finishing second to Phoebe Bodley-Scott from Great Britain, who scored 53. The bronze medal went to home favourite Annabella Hettmer.
This achievement marks Raiza's first individual ISSF World Cup medal at any level as she completes her final year as a junior competitor. This victory also adds to India’s tally, making it the third medal earned at the prestigious Suhl Junior World Cup, following Kanak’s
Outstanding Performance
Raiza began her day in fourth place with a score of 71 after three qualifying rounds. She shot strong rounds of 22 and 23, ultimately qualifying in second place.
Her advancement to the final was cemented not just by her score of 116 over five rounds, but also by triumphing in a tense three-way shoot-off with Phoebe and Hettmer.
Carrying her confidence into the final, Raiza began with four successful hits at the first Station 3 and was positioned second behind Phoebe after the first 10 targets, with one miss.
“Yesterday was manageable, but today’s conditions were quite cold and windy,” Raiza remarked post-final, as the weather grew increasingly challenging, leading to numerous misses from competitors.
Kazakhstan’s Lidiya Basharova was the first to be eliminated after 20 targets, followed by reigning junior world champion Madeleine Russell of Britain, and then reigning junior European champion Arianna Member of Italy, as Raiza secured a medal for India with 32 hits in the first 40 targets.
With her eyes set on gold, she nailed 19 out of the next 20 targets, but could only narrow the gap from Phoebe's three-point lead to two, ultimately settling for silver.
“It’s wonderful to earn an ISSF World Cup medal. After altering my technique pre-Olympics and finally adjusting post-Olympics, I was confident results would follow. I reached the final at the Peru Senior World Cup, which bolstered my confidence here. Now, I’m focused on the upcoming Lonato World Cup,” she concluded.
