Bengaluru, July 5 (NationPress) For Ranjith Kumar Ravichandran, a passionate supporter of Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, experiencing the inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic felt like a dream realized, as his travel and accommodation were graciously covered by the reigning world champion himself.
Originating from Coimbatore, Ranjith had reached out on social media seeking assistance to attend India’s first international javelin competition, scheduled for Saturday evening in Bengaluru. “If anyone can support me with ₹2,000, I can go to watch this from Coimbatore,” he posted on X on June 25.
A day later, Neeraj responded, offering him an all-inclusive VVIP experience along with a stay at a five-star hotel. “Hi, Ranjith. You have a full VVIP experience awaiting you in Bengaluru because your trip to @nc_classic is sponsored by me! Thanks to @RadissonHotels, you’ll be staying just 90 metres from me. Looking forward to seeing you!” Chopra wrote.
In an interview with IANS just before the event, Ranjith expressed, “I couldn’t believe it was actually happening. I was incredibly overwhelmed — it felt unreal to even receive a response from Neeraj Chopra himself. Initially, it was hard to believe. Such a moment is rare. Meeting a champion is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
“Nobody in my family believed it at first, just as I did. I had to convince them, ‘Yes, it’s genuinely happening,’ and explain everything. Ultimately, everyone was thrilled — my friends and family were all sincerely excited,” he remarked.
Adding to the event’s allure, Chopra also had a spontaneous interaction with an elderly admirer while strolling through the streets of Bengaluru earlier this week. Describing him as a “kind-hearted uncle,” the encounter was documented in a reel on the official Instagram account of the Neeraj Chopra Classic.
“Sometimes, the best moments aren’t planned. A quiet street in Bengaluru. A kind-hearted uncle. And a javelin legend who never forgets his roots,” the caption read.
As a World Athletics-sanctioned Gold event, the Neeraj Chopra Classic aims to enhance India's standing in the global athletics arena. It will showcase an impressive lineup of elite javelin throwers.
The event will include participation from renowned javelin athletes such as Chopra, Thomas Rohler, Julius Yego, and others. Chopra played a crucial role in facilitating the event's organization in India.
