New Delhi, April 10 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer and coach Ravi Shastri expressed heartfelt appreciation as a stand at the renowned Wankhede Stadium, which bears his name, was inaugurated. He referred to this venue as his "karmabhoomi", the place where his cricketing career took its initial steps.
On Thursday, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) honored cricket legends including Shastri, Dilip Sardesai, Eknath Solkar, and Diana Edulji at the historic Wankhede Stadium, celebrating their significant contributions to both Mumbai and Indian cricket.
The lower Level 1 stand, situated beneath the press box, is now officially recognized as the Ravi Shastri Stand, acknowledging his pivotal role in Indian cricket history. A member of the victorious 1983 World Cup squad, Shastri's legacy spans decades as a player, captain, coach, and commentator.
"I feel both honored and humbled to have a stand named after me at Wankhede, my karmabhoomi. This is where it all began, where I learned to compete, persevere, and stand my ground. I dearly missed my father, but I am thankful that my mother and family were present to share this special moment," Shastri shared on X.
The unveiling ceremony was led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, with stands named in honor of Shastri and stadium gates dedicated to Sardesai, Solkar, and Edulji.
Notable attendees included Cabinet Minister Ashish Shelar, MCA President Ajinkya Naik, cricket legends Sunil Gavaskar and Dilip Vengsarkar, along with MCA Apex Council members, and other prominent figures from the cricketing community.
Shastri extended his gratitude to the Hon'ble CM Shri @Dev_Fadnavis, Shri @ShelarAshish, Shri @ajinkyasnaik, the MCA Apex Council, and the entire MCA management for this tremendous recognition. Mumbai has given me everything, and this honor at Wankhede means more than I can express.
Furthermore, Gate No. 3 will now be the Dilip Sardesai Gate, Gate No. 6 will be the Eknath Solkar Gate, and Gate No. 5 will be the Diana Edulji Gate, commemorating the contributions of these three Mumbai legends.
