Why Have Four Referees Been Summoned by IFA Ahead of Messi's Kolkata Event?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 19 (NationPress) Four referees who managed a football match at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on December 13, preceding the highly anticipated appearance of Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi, are now facing scrutiny for allegedly officiating without the necessary approvals from relevant authorities.
The Indian Football Association (IFA), which oversees football activities in West Bengal, has called the four referees to appear before its internal disciplinary committee, demanding clarifications regarding their involvement in the match without the required permissions from either the IFA or the Calcutta Referees’ Association (CRA). Reports suggest that disciplinary measures might be taken against them.
On December 13 last year, Salt Lake Stadium, also known as Yuva Bharati Krirangan, was filled with fans eager to catch a glimpse of the global football icon, long before the scheduled event. However, chaos ensued shortly after Messi’s arrival as the crowd surged to take photos, overwhelming security measures. Many spectators later expressed their disappointment over not being able to see Messi clearly, as he departed the field after only 22 minutes.
Following Messi's exit, incidents of vandalism erupted within the stadium. Chairs and bottles were thrown onto the field, gates were breached, and numerous fans rushed onto the pitch. Damages were reported in the grandstands and restrooms as well. In response, the state government has set up an investigation committee to look into the incident.
Event organizer Satadru Dutta was arrested and is currently in judicial custody. Additionally, Aroop resigned from his position as state Sports Minister, and high-ranking IPS officials, including Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar, received show-cause notices.
Before Messi's event, a match between Mohun Bagan and Diamond Harbour Legends took place at Yuva Bharati Stadium. The four referees now under scrutiny officiated that match. They are accused of not securing the necessary clearance from both the IFA and the CRA prior to officiating.
The IFA’s disciplinary committee is set to convene on January 20, where the referees are expected to provide their explanations. Sources indicate that actions could be taken against them for violating regulations regarding officiating at significant events without proper authorization. It will be interesting to see what defense the referees present before the committee.
