Mumbai, April 16 (NationPress) In a surprising turn of events, the former captain of the Mumbai Indians, Rohit Sharma, has been sidelined due to a hamstring injury sustained in the previous encounter. This led the Punjab Kings to win the toss and opt to bowl first during Match 24 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, held at the prestigious Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday.

Speculation about Rohit’s participation was rampant, with the Mumbai Indians remaining tight-lipped until the last moment. Ultimately, they chose to play it safe by resting him.

With Rohit absent, Quinton de Kock stepped up to open the innings alongside his fellow South African, Ryan Rickelton. At the toss, Hardik Pandya, the MI captain, revealed that New Zealand spinner Mitchell Santner was unwell and therefore rested, paving the way for Deepak Chahar to replace Trent Boult.

The MI team also welcomed Mayank Rawat, who was handed his debut cap, while PBKS retained their previous playing XI.

Punjab Kings’ captain Shreyas Iyer mentioned that he consulted with some players and concluded that with the dew expected, the pitch would perform better, influencing his decision to bowl first.

"We’ve had a fantastic start so far. That's what I, as a captain, can hope for. Our combination has been excellent. I urge the team to remain proactive; complacency can creep in, and it’s crucial to stay focused. Although the pitch seems dry, players have indicated its improvement with dew," he stated.

MI’s captain Hardik Pandya expressed a similar sentiment, noting, "We were also inclined to bowl first, but it's a good toss to lose. Now, it's time to play some quality cricket and secure a win. We have shown good form but missed crucial moments. In the last match, we had four overs exceeding 20 runs, which is unacceptable. We've addressed this and made our plans accordingly," he remarked.
