Madrid, July 9 (NationPress) Newly signed Matteo Ruggeri of Atletico Madrid expresses that he didn’t hesitate when the club expressed interest in his talents for La Liga.
The 22-year-old full-back transitioned to Atletico a week ago from Atalanta for an estimated fee of 17 million euros (approximately 20 million U.S. dollars), securing a five-year deal that extends until June 2030.
"When my agents informed me that Atletico was keen on me, I made my decision without a second thought. I immediately said 'yes.' This is an immense opportunity that I couldn't allow to pass me by. I’m thrilled to be here," the Italian stated on the club’s website, as reported by Xinhua.
Ruggeri will vie with Javi Galan for the left-back position in Atletico’s defense, but he acknowledged the need to adapt if coach Diego Simeone opts for a flat back four.
"I’ve primarily played as a wing-back in a back five, yet I can also adapt to a back four or as a left center-back in a back three. I enjoy moving forward and putting in the effort," the defender noted, describing himself as "an aggressive player with a combative mindset."
He shared that his nickname, 'The Tiger', is a reflection of his playing style. "I never hold back. On the pitch, I always showcase this fighting spirit and energy," he remarked.
Ruggeri expressed his ambition at Atletico to "work hard and improve daily," and he eagerly anticipates collaborating with Simeone.
"Playing under Simeone is a dream realized. He’s an extraordinary coach. I spoke with him a few days ago, and my impression is that he’s a remarkable individual. It fills me with pride, and I hope to demonstrate my skills to him," Ruggeri added, also mentioning his reunion with Atletico goalkeeper Juan Musso.
"He shared wonderful insights about the club, further fueling my motivation," he concluded.
