Bilbao (Spain), May 24 (NationPress) - On Saturday, defender Inigo Lekue and midfielder Ruiz de Galarreta officially extended their contracts with La Liga club Athletic Club. Lekue has signed a one-year extension, ensuring his stay with Los Leones until June 30, 2026, while Galarreta, who has made 74 appearances over the last two seasons (39 this campaign), has penned a new contract until June 30, 2027.
The full-back, who joined Lezama from local youth team Danok Bat in 2012, completed his signing at San Mames on Saturday morning alongside club president Jon Uriarte and director of football Mikel González.
With 262 official games played, including 53 in the last two seasons, Lekue has proven himself as an essential player due to his versatility on the field. He has been a consistent presence at full-back on both flanks this season, delivering outstanding performances in the closing stages of the 2024/25 campaign.
Expressing his pride, Lekue stated, “This renewal means everything to me, both professionally and personally. Living this dream is truly spectacular.”
He added, “This season’s level of competition is unprecedented for me. Last season, we won the Copa after 40 years, celebrated with La Gabarra, and returned to Europe, which was unforgettable. However, in terms of consistency, this year stands out as the best I’ve seen.”
Galarreta, who first joined Lezama as an 11-year-old, has thrived since returning to Bilbao from RCD Mallorca two years ago, making 74 appearances for Los Leones.
The 31-year-old has been a vital component in Ernesto Valverde’s system since his return to San Mames, contributing balance, vision, and character in midfield.
Galarreta expressed his joy, stating, “I’m thrilled to extend this dream for another two years.”
He continued, “Everything I’ve experienced since returning home has been incredible, and we eagerly anticipate what lies ahead. Just recently, I was playing in the second division, which is also extremely challenging. Next season, I’ll be hearing the Champions League anthem at San Mamés, something I could never have imagined.”
