Holger Rune Set for Exciting Comeback at Hamburg Open in May
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hamburg, April 9 (NationPress) Holger Rune is set to return to the court at the Hamburg Open, an ATP 500 tournament, next month, according to the tournament organizers. This marks his highly anticipated comeback after an extended period of recovery from an injury. Rune, who is also on the entry list for the ATP Masters 1000 event in Rome at the beginning of May, will be making his third appearance in Hamburg, having reached the quarter-finals in 2024.
His 2025 season faced a significant setback when he endured a complete rupture of his Achilles tendon during the ATP tournament in Stockholm last October. This injury necessitated surgery and several months of rehabilitation. Rune has been diligently preparing for his return to the professional circuit, and his participation is now officially confirmed.
“The hard work commences in Hamburg. I am eagerly looking forward to stepping back onto the clay at the Bitpanda Hamburg Open and experiencing the vibrant atmosphere there after such a long hiatus,” Rune stated.
Before his injury, Rune had an impressive record of 36 wins and 22 losses in 2025, as per the ATP Win/Loss Index.
Tournament Director Enric Molina Mur expressed excitement about Rune’s comeback. “We are thrilled to welcome Holger Rune back to Hamburg. I recognize the immense effort he has dedicated to his rehabilitation, and we feel privileged that he has chosen the Bitpanda Hamburg Open for his return,” Mur said.
“I am confident that he will once again enjoy the unique ambiance at Rothenbaum, both from the local Hamburg fans and the many supporters traveling from Denmark,” he added.
In addition to Rune, several other German players, including Jan-Lennard Struff and emerging talent Justin Engel, have confirmed their participation. World number three Alexander Zverev will also compete in his hometown, aiming to secure the title.
The competition is expected to be intense, with defending champion Flavio Cobolli and Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime also returning to Rothenbaum.
