The 51-year-old Aleksandrovich, a medalist in various global competitions with a bronze from the 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Games, has been appointed with the upcoming Olympic Games cycle in mind, as confirmed by chief national coach Radhakrishnan Nair on Tuesday. "The Russian javelin throw expert arrived earlier this week and will be stationed at Patiala’s National Institute of Sports in Punjab," Nair stated. "Aleksandrovich’s extensive experience as both an athlete and coach will undoubtedly enhance the growth of javelin throw in our country."

During the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra secured a silver medal, adding to the gold he achieved at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

At the 2023 World Athletics Championships, three Indian javelin throwers ranked among the top six, with Chopra winning the gold medal. The double Olympic medallist had previously claimed silver at the 2022 Eugene World Athletics Championships. Besides supervising the elite Indian javelin throw program, the Russian coach will also engage with Indian coaches periodically to enhance their expertise, as stated by the AFI on Tuesday.

According to the chief national athletics coach, the primary focus will be the 2025 World Athletics Championships commencing on September 13 in Tokyo, Japan. "The Asian Championships in May is another key event this year," Nair added.

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) recommended Aleksandrovich’s appointment to the sports ministry, which was approved to oversee the training of elite Indian javelin throwers. Aleksandrovich boasts an impressive profile, having set a Russian record with a personal best of 92.61m in 2002 in Sheffield. Throughout his competitive career, he has achieved throws over 90m on four occasions. He also earned bronze medals at the 2003 Paris World Athletics Championships and the 2005 Helsinki World Championships in Finland. Additionally, Aleksandrovich served as the coach for the Russian national team from 2012 to 2018.
