New Delhi, April 14 (NationPress) The journey of Sakib Hussain, the emerging pacer for Sunrisers Hyderabad, has garnered attention not solely for his remarkable IPL debut, but for a narrative steeped in struggle, determination, and sacrifice. This story has gained traction following the viral resurgence of an earlier video from his time with Kolkata Knight Riders.

Originating from a humble background in Gopalganj, Bihar, Sakib faced significant financial barriers that hindered his early cricketing aspirations, leaving even basic gear unattainable. "Shoes are a luxury. Quality bowling spikes cost between Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000. If we invest that much in shoes, what will we eat?" he expressed in a now-famous video.

His mother recounted the emotional struggles and sacrifices made to support his dreams. "He was in tears, saying, 'Mummy, I don’t have shoes, how will I play?' We simply didn’t have the funds. I had to sell my jewellery just to buy him those shoes," she shared.

Despite the challenges, Sakib’s cricketing journey progressed steadily. Initially, he was a net bowler for Chennai Super Kings before being acquired by KKR for the 2024 season. Unfortunately, he didn't get to play in any matches during his two-season tenure with the team.

Looking back on his roots, Sakib acknowledged the responsibilities he assumed early on due to his family's situation. "I hail from Bihar, and my district, Gopalganj, is roughly 125 km from Patna. We don't have much at home. My father engaged in farming but had to stop due to a knee issue, so I advised him to retire from it," he said.

His father echoed their struggles during those times. "Now, I am the one responsible for the family. Even arranging a single meal could become a challenge if I fell ill," he mentioned.

Sakib's entry into cricket was propelled by local support rather than formal coaching. "There's a field nearby, and he would get up early in the morning to run. Local coaches noticed him and encouraged him to try cricket," his father noted.

He began with tennis-ball cricket, often journeying long distances to earn small match fees, which only fueled his determination. "I played tennis-ball cricket, earning Rs 500, 600, 700, and sometimes even Rs 2,000 for traveling around 150 km to play. From that moment, I resolved to pursue cricket seriously," Sakib added.

His performances soon showcased his potential. He made his T20 debut for Bihar in the 2022–23 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and made an impact by taking 4/20 in just his second match at the age of 17. He later achieved a five-wicket haul in the 2025–26 Ranji Trophy, with impressive figures of 6/41 against Arunachal Pradesh.

His stellar performances caught the eyes of IPL scouts, and during the 2026 auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad signed him for Rs 30 lakh.

He made an immediate impact on his debut, playing a crucial role in Hyderabad’s victory while defending a total of 217. After securing early breakthroughs, Sakib made significant contributions by dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal and later breaking a dangerous partnership by taking out both Donovan Ferreira, Jofra Archer, and Ravi Bishnoi to clinch the win.

Sakib’s ascent from a small village to the IPL spotlight underscores a journey characterized by resilience and unwavering determination, beginning with a simple challenge and a family's steadfast support, culminating in success on the grandest stage of domestic cricket.
