Will Pakistan's Salman Agha Bat at No. 3 in the T20 World Cup?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 30 (NationPress) As Pakistan hinted at a revamped top six during the initial T20I against Australia, captain Salman Ali Agha has officially stated that he will take up the No. 3 batting position for the squad in the forthcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
Traditionally, Ali Agha has batted lower in Pakistan's lineup throughout his T20I career, but he has now opted to ascend to the pivotal No. 3 spot to offer a more aggressive approach for his team.
The right-handed batsman showed promising form at the No. 3 position against Australia in the first T20I of their three-match series in Lahore, scoring a brisk 39 runs as Pakistan secured a remarkable 22-run victory just days ahead of the T20 World Cup.
Ali Agha remarked, "Yes, I’ll be batting at No. 3 moving forward. We anticipate facing significant spin, and I believe I can tackle it effectively during the Powerplay. That’s why I’ve moved up, and that’s where I intend to remain," as quoted by ICC.
This shift means that Babar Azam will likely have to adapt to a new role, having scored 24 runs off 20 balls while batting at No. 4 against the Australians.
Pakistan successfully defended their total of 168 runs in the first of three T20Is against Australia at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
In response, the Australians lost six wickets to spin and fell short by 22 runs in their chase.
Reflecting on the match, Ali Agha said, "We began well with the bat but didn’t finish as we had hoped. It became difficult after the first 10 overs as the ball stopped coming onto the bat, but I believe our bowling was exceptional.
"Honestly, I felt 170 was sufficient. Given our position after 10 overs, we could have possibly added 15 more runs, but I was confident that 170 would be enough on this pitch due to our outstanding spin bowling."
The second and third matches of the series are set to take place on Saturday and Sunday.
