According to a statement released by the IPL on Thursday, both Samson and the entire RR squad have been penalized under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. "The remaining players in the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, will face fines of either Rs 6 lakhs or 25 percent of their match fees, whichever is lower," it noted.
Previously, RR experienced an over-rate infraction under the leadership of Riyan Parag, who was fined Rs 12 lakh after his team's victory against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. In that match, Samson participated solely as an impact player due to a finger injury.
Other captains penalized for over-rate violations in IPL 2025 include Hardik Pandya of Mumbai Indians (MI), Rishabh Pant of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and Rajat Patidar of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
In the match, RR faced a comprehensive defeat on a red-soil pitch, with left-handed opener B Sai Sudharsan continuing his stellar form by scoring an impressive 82 runs, leading GT to a total of 217/6. In response, pacer Prasidh Krishna took 3 wickets for 24 runs in a collective bowling effort as GT dismissed RR for 159 in 19.2 overs.
For RR, apart from Shimron Hetmyer (52), Samson (41), and Parag (26), no other player managed to reach double digits. GT's fourth consecutive victory has propelled them to the top of the IPL 2025 standings.
Once champions in 2008, RR currently stands at seventh position in the points table after experiencing their third loss in five matches. They are set to face Patidar-led RCB in a Sunday afternoon showdown at their original home ground, the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.
