New Delhi, April 21 (NationPress) Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson will be absent from his team's forthcoming IPL 2025 match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) due to a side strain. The franchise has confirmed that as part of his recovery, Samson will not travel to Bengaluru and will remain in Jaipur with select RR medical staff.

The wicketkeeper-opener sustained the injury while playing against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, being forced to retire hurt after scoring 31 runs off 19 balls, as RR ultimately lost in a thrilling Super Over.

"The team management is closely monitoring his recovery, taking a game-by-game approach to his return," stated the franchise in its announcement on Monday. This also means Riyan Parag, who has already captained RR in four matches during Samson’s absence, will lead the team against Rajat Patidar-led RCB at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Thursday.

With Samson unavailable for the match against RCB, left-handed batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who made history as the youngest player to compete in the tournament at just 14 years old during their two-run loss to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), will continue to open the batting alongside Jaiswal.

Samson stands as RR's second highest run-scorer of IPL 2025, having amassed 224 runs in seven innings at an average of 37.33. He, Parag, and RR's leading scorer this season Yashasvi Jaiswal (307 runs in eight innings) are the only players from the team to exceed 200 runs in the current season.

RR, who were the inaugural IPL champions in 2008, currently sit in eighth place on the IPL 2025 points table with four points, narrowly ahead of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) based on net run rate (NRR).
