New Delhi, March 12 (NationPress) As the IPL 2025 season approaches, Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson shared that parting ways with his close friend, wicketkeeper-opener Jos Buttler, was incredibly difficult. He expressed that if he could alter any rule in the IPL, it would be to prohibit the release of players.
The retention of players like Samson, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shimron Hetmyer left no room for Buttler, who is set to join the Gujarat Titans for the upcoming season starting March 22.
"The IPL provides a platform for leadership and playing at the highest level, but it also fosters close friendships. Jos Buttler has been one of my dearest friends. We've played alongside each other for seven years, establishing a strong batting partnership. Our bond was deep, and he was like an elder brother to me.
“When I took on the captaincy, he was my vice-captain and played a significant role in my leadership journey. Letting him go is among the hardest experiences I've faced. Even during a dinner in the England series, I told him I had yet to come to terms with it. If I could change one aspect of the IPL, it would be the rule regarding player releases.
“Despite its advantages, on a personal level, you lose valuable connections and relationships built over the years. This situation has been challenging for me, the entire franchise, the owners, the coaching staff, and everyone affiliated with RR. Jos was part of our family," Samson shared with JioHotstar on Wednesday.
Samson also highlighted the importance of retaining key players like Jurel, Parag, and Hetmyer. "Having players who are already integrated into the team creates a significant connection. It simplifies my role because we understand each other well, both on and off the field, which enhances team coordination.
In last year's mega auction, RR made headlines by signing 13-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who now holds the record for being the youngest player to secure an IPL contract. The left-handed batter from Samastipur, Bihar, also scored a century for India U19 in their four-day match against Australia U19 in Chennai last year.
When asked about the advice he would offer to emerging talents like him, Samson stated, "Today's youngsters are filled with confidence. They are brave and aware of the current dynamics in Indian cricket and the style of play required."
"Instead of giving advice, I prefer to observe how a young player approaches the game, what they enjoy, and the type of support they need from me. Then, I tailor my guidance accordingly.
"Vaibhav appears very confident; he was hitting sixes out of the park at the academy. His power-hitting is already the talk of the town. What more could one ask for? It’s all about recognizing his strengths, supporting him, and being there for him like an elder brother.
"I believe he looks ready to make an impact. The key is to keep him in optimal shape and provide a relaxed environment, which Rajasthan Royals is known for. We prioritize a positive atmosphere in the dressing room and support our players. You never know—he might find himself representing India in a couple of years. I feel he is prepared for the IPL. He seems capable of delivering some impressive performances. Let’s see what the future brings," he elaborated.
Samson concluded by expressing his admiration for spending time with the legendary MS Dhoni. "Like every aspiring Indian cricketer, I always wished to be around MS Dhoni. Every time we faced CSK, I wanted to converse with him, learning about his methods.
“It was a dream come true. I recall playing a match against CSK in Sharjah, where I performed exceptionally, scoring around 70-80 runs, leading to a victory, and earning the Man of the Match award. After that, I had the chance to meet Mahi bhai, and since then, our relationship has flourished. Even now, I frequently meet him. Just yesterday, I encountered him again. It’s a truly blessed feeling—to transition from idolizing him to now sharing moments with him during shoots and events. It feels like I’m living my dream," he concluded.
