Christchurch, Nov 4 (NationPress) Wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert has been sidelined from the forthcoming T20I series against the West Indies due to a fractured finger, as confirmed by New Zealand Cricket on Tuesday.
The five-match T20I series is set to kick off on Wednesday at Eden Park in Auckland.
“Seifert had to retire hurt after sustaining a finger injury while batting for Northern Districts during Monday’s Ford Trophy match against the Wellington Firebirds, and an x-ray later confirmed a fracture in his right index finger,” stated NZC.
Head coach Rob Walter expressed disappointment over Seifert's absence just before a crucial series.
“We’re all feeling for Tim. He’s a vital part of this T20 squad, contributing both with his batting power and as a keeper, so his absence will be felt in the next five matches.
“His recent performances indicate that he was hitting peak form, making it all the more frustrating that this setback has occurred as we gear up for a major event.
“We’re optimistic for a swift recovery for Tim, and we hope to see him back on the field soon,” Walter added.
In light of Seifert's injury, Mitch Hay has been brought into the squad and joined the team on Monday evening.
Hay has played in 11 T20 internationals for New Zealand since his debut against Sri Lanka in Dambulla last November, and he holds the world record for the most dismissals (6) in a single T20 international innings.
Walter stated that Hay is a capable replacement for Seifert. “Mitch has demonstrated his skills in past international appearances, proving he is a quality wicketkeeper-batter who can perform at this level.
“We’re fortunate to have another player of his caliber available, which highlights the depth of talent we currently possess in the T20 format.”
