Sevilla FC are staring at a significant squad rebuild ahead of the new La Liga season after confirming the departures of right-back Juanlu Sanchez to Bournemouth and Switzerland international midfielder Djibril Sow to Genoa, leaving coach Luis Garcia with a thinner and arguably weaker roster than the one that narrowly avoided relegation last term.

Juanlu Heads to the Premier League

Juanlu Sanchez, 22, confirmed his switch to Bournemouth while speaking to the press at Seville airport a day before the club's official announcement. The full-back described the move as a 'win-win', saying: 'At the end of the day, it's a good project to continue growing, and it's what we both needed.'

Juanlu added: 'The club needed that income, and I also needed to keep growing. Leaving home is always complicated, but when I saw the project and the club saw the offer, I think neither of us had many doubts.' The transfer is reportedly worth around 11 million euros (12.7 million US dollars), providing a much-needed injection into Sevilla's strained finances.

Sow Departs After 100 Appearances

Djibril Sow completed his move to Genoa FC after the Italian club triggered his release clause of four million euros. The Swiss midfielder had joined Sevilla in the summer of 2023 from Eintracht Frankfurt and made 100 official appearances, scoring eight goals and registering 13 assists. Sevilla confirmed the deal on their official website, describing it as a mutual agreement between the two clubs.

The Scale of Summer Departures

The exits of Juanlu and Sow are merely the latest in a wave of departures since the end of June. Cesar Azpilicueta retired, while captain and defensive midfielder Nemanja Gudelj has also left the club. Others to have departed include Batista Mendy, Alexis Sanchez, Neal Maupay, Adnan Januzaj, Tanguy Nianzou, and top scorer Akor Adams — a collective exit that has hollowed out the squad's experience and depth.

Notably, the financial returns from these sales are helping address Sevilla's well-documented poor financial situation, but the sporting cost is considerable.

Incoming Signings and What They Offer

Sevilla have moved to plug the gaps with several arrivals: Juan Iglesias from Getafe, Jon Guridi from Alaves, midfielder Arouna Sangante from Le Havre, young left-back Juan Diaz from Atletico Madrid, and goalkeeper Fran Gonzalez from Real Madrid. While these additions bring fresh options, they are largely unproven at La Liga's mid-to-upper competitive level.

Garcia's Challenge With the Season Eight Days Away

Coach Luis Garcia — who previously managed Levante, Alaves, Getafe, and Mallorca — arrived at Sevilla in the closing weeks of last season and guided the club through a critical run of results that secured their top-flight status. With the La Liga season due to begin in eight days, however, the squad he now leads appears, on paper, weaker than the one that only barely survived relegation a year ago.
