Nottingham, June 28 (NationPress) India opener Shafali Verma shared her journey of resilience, highlighting the importance of fitness and a positive mindset after her exclusion from the national team last year. She emphasized the lessons learned from facing challenges during her absence from the squad.
Selected for the upcoming five-match T20I series against England, Shafali is set to wear the Indian jersey for the first time in eight months this Saturday.
“I dedicated 20-25 days to enhancing my fitness. After that break, I picked up the bat again and felt invigorated. This phase taught me many valuable lessons. I will give my best and trust in fate,” Shafali expressed in a BCCI interview.
“Returning to the team brings its own set of challenges, but being back in this environment is incredibly fulfilling. I am thrilled about my comeback,” she added.
Reflecting on her journey, the 21-year-old revealed that her father faced a heart attack just ten days prior to her exclusion from the team.
“Ten days before my selection for the series against Australia, my father had a heart attack. It was a challenging time, and I was confused about my selection status,” she recounted.
Fortunately, her father recovered and supported Shafali in improving her skills.
“Once my dad got better, he encouraged me to work intensively on my fitness ahead of the domestic season. It was a roller-coaster period for me, and I believe experiencing such challenges is crucial for personal growth,” she stated.
“A player must embrace both good and bad days. Being prepared for both is essential to becoming a star,” she remarked.
The right-handed batter noted that watching the legendary Sachin Tendulkar helped her refine her batting technique and appreciate quality deliveries.
“In the past, I focused on hitting boundaries with every ball, but I learned the importance of respecting a good delivery. Watching Sachin's Test innings inspired me greatly,” Shafali mentioned.
“It took me back to my childhood when I never missed a game of his. I rewatched many matches and realized that building a solid innings requires respect for quality deliveries,” she added.
During her hiatus from the national team, Shafali seized every opportunity to score runs in domestic cricket.
“I decided that whenever I had a chance, I would solely focus on scoring runs, avoiding worries about the future. When the WPL came, I committed to living in the present, which became my greatest motivation,” she shared.
“When I learned I was selected for the T20 series against England, my dad reminded me to focus on my work and leave the rest to fate. This is a crucial moment for us to win the series in England. Having played here before, I understand the factors that influence the game. Receiving my jersey back after such a long time is a cherished moment,” she concluded.
