New Delhi, March 25 (NationPress) Opener for Delhi Capitals (DC), Prithvi Shaw, expressed that he views the approaching season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as a new beginning for him within the team. He emphasized that his primary aim is to contribute significantly to the team while also working towards regaining his spot in the Indian squad.

“Every season brings a fresh start, without a doubt. There are countless memories, but they belong to the past. This is a new chapter with a revamped team and numerous changes. I was absent last year and have just returned this season,” said Shaw.

“We have practiced diligently to ensure we start the IPL on a high note. Hence, it's a new opportunity. The positive memories we created together previously are in the past, and now it's time for a fresh start,” he added during a practice session at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday.

After missing IPL 2025, Shaw has been brought back by Delhi for the 2026 season. From 2018 to 2024, he accumulated 1,892 runs in 79 innings with a strike rate of 148, despite some inconsistencies in his performance. He recorded only 106 runs in 2023 but bounced back in 2024, scoring 198 runs at a strike rate of 164, albeit with five scores below 20. Fitness and behavioral issues had previously sidelined him from the Mumbai domestic team, leading to his relocation to Maharashtra.

“I feel everything is progressing positively. I've never viewed myself as weak; I've always had faith in my abilities, even when others doubted me. My family has stood by me. I focus on the present—what I can accomplish today,” he stated.

“The last few years have taught me valuable lessons. Continuous learning is essential; without it, what’s the point? I've navigated the ups and downs effectively, and it's been an enriching experience. There were times of success and struggle, and I’ve dedicated myself to improvement,” he explained.

Another positive influence in Shaw's life is his recent engagement to his long-time partner, actress and influencer Akriti Agarwal. “I’m not married yet. I believe in finding the right partner at the right time, and I feel fortunate to have found that. This is the first time I’m addressing this question, so I’m a bit surprised,” he remarked.

“There was stability in my life before, but she has been my lucky charm. We both worked hard to build our relationship, which wasn't always easy. We understand our individual paths—I'm a cricketer, and she's an actress. Sometimes sacrifices are necessary, and we keep that in perspective,” he said.

Many still regard Shaw, who has played in all formats for India, as a talented young player. He acknowledged this, saying, “I still feel youthful and sometimes think back to winning the U-19 World Cup. It feels like just yesterday. Having a partner who understands me has been a great blessing.”

Shaw had a mixed performance in domestic cricket last year, amassing 183 runs in seven innings during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy at a strike rate of 161 while experiencing several low scores. He recognized that the lessons from challenging phases have propelled him to commit fully to his cricketing journey.

“That’s my motivation. I aim to return to the Indian team, and my hard work has tripled compared to before. I prefer not to discuss it, but I’m giving 200 percent to get back into the Indian squad or to secure this trophy while performing at my best during matches and practices,” he shared.

“It’s not just about match days; I strive to excel during practice as well. If I’m not feeling well, I won’t train. Practicing half-heartedly yields no results. On the field, I either give it my all or don’t show up. I respect everything that happened last year,” he added.

Shaw acknowledged the pressures from his family, fans, and the franchise but emphasized that his commitment lies in giving his best rather than fixating on results. “Everyone has expectations—my family, fans, and the franchise. Cricket demands full dedication. If I perform well, it will naturally translate to success, but I can't guarantee any specific outcomes. I focus on playing my best,” he explained.

Discussing the competition for the opening slot, Shaw felt it remains fierce. “I haven’t given it much thought. If KL Rahul opens, I hope whoever takes the position excels. Cricket is inherently competitive, whether in Ranji Trophy, IPL, or India A. There are many openers, and I prioritize the team’s success over personal ambitions. I wish anyone who plays alongside me a fantastic season,” he concluded.

Shaw wrapped up by sharing that his resilience has been vital through the turbulence of recent years. “Engagement is just a part of hard work—training and maintaining mental strength. I used to stress a lot, but I’ve learned to embrace challenges with a smile. I’ve faced numerous life challenges, and I no longer take anything for granted. When faced with stress, I focus on staying mentally strong,” he said.
