Amritsar Soormas and Mohali Kings will lock horns in the opening fixture of the Sher-E-Punjab T20 League 2026 at the I.S. Bindra Stadium, Mohali, on 30 August. Organised by the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), the tournament runs through 13 September and is designed to bridge the gap between grassroots cricket and elite domestic competition in the state.

Coaches Set the Tone

Amritsar Soormas coach Sandeep Sanwal urged his side to stay disciplined and respect the opposition heading into the season opener. 'We cannot underestimate the opposition. We have our own strategy and tactics, and we will look to execute them well. At the same time, the opposition will also have quality players who can change the game,' Sanwal said.

Mohali Kings coach Harwinder Singh was equally measured, hinting at a targeted approach against Amritsar's batting line-up. 'I don't think I should reveal our strategy, but we will definitely target their strong points. Their batting is quite strong. So, our focus will be to tackle those key players as quickly and effectively as possible, so that the rest of the team can be put under pressure,' he said.

A Platform for Punjab's Young Talent

Both coaches see the league as far more than a standalone competition. Sanwal pointed to Punjab's strong domestic cricket pedigree — including Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy success and a healthy pipeline of IPL-contracted players — as evidence that the Sher-E-Punjab T20 League has the potential to rank among India's top state-level T20 competitions.

'The talent at the grassroots level in Punjab is tremendous. The youngsters are very talented, and this league gives them a good opportunity and a proper platform to showcase themselves,' Sanwal added.

The Amritsar Soormas squad reflects that philosophy, blending youth with experience. Sanwal confirmed the inclusion of three Under-19 fast bowlers, alongside emerging pacer Shubham Rana and seasoned leg-spinner Mayank Markande.

IPL Visibility for Unheralded Players

Harwinder Singh highlighted the league's potential to open doors with IPL franchises for players who have so far flown under the radar. 'There are players who are particularly suited to T20 cricket, and this tournament gives them an opportunity to showcase their talent. If they perform well, I am sure IPL franchises will start looking at them,' he said.

He also underscored the mentoring dynamic within his squad, noting that experienced campaigner Ramandeep Singh is actively guiding younger batters during match situations. 'When Raman is batting at one end and a youngster is batting at the other, he can guide him through the game and share his experience. That kind of exposure is invaluable for young players,' Harwinder noted.

The Sher-E-Punjab T20 League 2026 will be played entirely at the I.S. Bindra Stadium, Mohali, from 30 August to 13 September 2026. With Punjab's domestic cricket on an upward curve, the tournament is being watched closely as a potential launchpad for the state's next generation of T20 specialists.
