IANS: What motivated you to pen your autobiography? Is it solely focused on your professional path, or does it reveal personal insights as well?

Dhawan: The goal was to showcase my journey beyond what is often visible. 'The One' is not merely about the runs I've scored or the matches I've participated in — it's about my emotional evolution, my setbacks, heartaches, spiritual growth, and my transformation as an individual. It encompasses the unseen struggles I've faced off the field. I aimed to be open and genuine so that others, particularly the youth, can find resonance and inspiration.

IANS: Reflecting on your experiences, what advice would you impart to young individuals in India?

Dhawan: I would emphasize the importance of having faith in your journey. Consistency surpasses talent when talent lacks direction. Also, don’t shy away from failures. I've encountered numerous hurdles in life and my career, but I viewed them as valuable lessons. It's vital to remain humble. While success may be fleeting, values, discipline, and gratitude will sustain you through challenges.

IANS: Who would you say was the toughest bowler you've faced? Any memorable sledging or humorous exchanges on the field?

Dhawan: Dale Steyn always posed a challenge — his speed, ferocity, and skill were intimidating! James Anderson was another tough competitor. As for sledging, it’s an inherent part of the game; sometimes, it brings out the best in you.

IANS: What’s your perspective on the young Indian team competing in England? What are their prospects?

Dhawan: First off, I want to commend the entire team for their remarkable victory at Edgbaston after 58 years — a truly phenomenal accomplishment! The way the boys rallied in the second Test demonstrated exceptional character and resilience.

Shubman Gill showcased his leadership with remarkable innings of 269 and 161, with stellar support from Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep, particularly in the absence of Bumrah. Even in the first Test, despite the loss, there were many positives. Gill’s solid 147 and Rishabh Pant’s outstanding twin centuries of 134 and 118 displayed immense maturity and adaptability in English conditions.

KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal also contributed with fluent centuries, setting the stage for a formidable batting performance. Achieving five centuries in a single match on English soil is no insignificant feat. Jasprit Bumrah was equally impactful, securing a five-wicket haul and keeping the English batsmen on their toes.

The team clearly learned from their first outing and returned stronger in the second. Both tests have been thrilling and marked by high-quality cricket.
