Former India cricketer and national selector Devang Gandhi has backed Shreyas Iyer as the leading candidate to succeed Suryakumar Yadav as India's men's T20I captain, citing Iyer's IPL-winning record with Kolkata Knight Riders and his recent success leading Punjab Kings as the strongest case for a transition.

The Selection Decision Looming in Mumbai

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is set to convene in Mumbai on Saturday to pick India's squad for upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England. The central question before them: whether to persist with Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain or begin a new leadership cycle.

Suryakumar was appointed captain after Rohit Sharma retired following India's 2024 T20 World Cup triumph. He then scripted history by leading India to a successful title defence at home — a rare back-to-back feat. Yet his personal batting form has drawn scrutiny. In IPL 2026, Suryakumar managed only 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76 and a strike rate of 147.54. Even during the World Cup, he accumulated 242 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 136.72, with his sole standout performance being an unbeaten 84 against the USA in Mumbai that earned him the Player-of-the-Match award.

Why Suryakumar's Future Is Under the Scanner

With Suryakumar set to turn 36 in September, selectors must weigh retaining him for his experience against identifying a leader for the next two-year cycle. The stakes are heightened by India's scheduled participation in the Los Angeles Olympics and their entry into the 2028 T20 World Cup as defending champions.

'I think the Olympics are two years hence. Are the selectors looking at him for two years hence? So, that's the big question,' Gandhi said in an interview on Friday. 'The way Surya has batted, I think that is a matter of concern. But going ahead, yes, I think we need to move on now.'

Gandhi's Case for Shreyas Iyer

Gandhi was unequivocal in his backing for Shreyas Iyer, pointing to a consistent leadership record across formats and franchises. Iyer guided KKR to the IPL 2024 title, led Delhi Capitals to the final in 2020, steered Punjab Kings to the final in 2025, and captained Mumbai to the 2024/25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Iyer currently serves as ODI vice-captain and was part of the squad for the T20I series win over New Zealand as a replacement for injured Tilak Varma, though he was not part of the previous T20 World Cup cycle.

'I think Shreyas, the way he has led Punjab and even before that, captaining KKR — he had a fantastic run as they won the IPL under his captaincy. I think he is at the moment the frontrunner and quite deservingly, if he gets an opportunity, I think it will be fine,' Gandhi said.

Gandhi also named Rajat Patidar as another player in contention, noting that strong individual performances across the board have made the race for spots highly competitive.

Gandhi Backs Ishan Kishan as Vice-Captain

On the question of vice-captaincy, Gandhi favoured Ishan Kishan, citing his consistency around the squad and recent leadership experience. Kishan was a key contributor in India's T20 World Cup win, captained Sunrisers Hyderabad in Pat Cummins' absence during IPL 2026, and previously led Jharkhand to the 2025/26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title.

'The way Ishan has done well, I think he can be his deputy as well. So, I think in my opinion, I would favour Ishan Kishan,' Gandhi said, while also acknowledging Tilak Varma as a long-term prospect given his continued presence in the squad setup.

The Selection Framework: Balance of Form, Experience and Vision

Gandhi emphasised that the selection committee must weigh current form, leadership experience, and long-term vision together rather than prioritising any single factor. 'It's a balance of all three. Who is going to lead till the next T20 World Cup? Who will be able to bring some sort of balanced experience to the side?' he said. 'If you look at a pattern, you will understand whether he's led his side... you get an idea whether he has the leadership qualities or not.'

With the selection meeting imminent, India's T20I captaincy transition — if it comes — will set the tone for the country's white-ball ambitions through to the 2028 World Cup and beyond.
