Pune, April 9 (NationPress) Shrivalli Bhamidipaty, ranked 304 in the WTA singles rankings, kicked off India's campaign with a stellar performance in her inaugural match at the Billie Jean King Cup Asia-Oceania Group 1. Reflecting on her debut, she expressed that she felt a bit emotional on the court, but the sensation following her win was surreal.
The 23-year-old from Hyderabad triumphed over New Zealand's Aishi Das, clinching a decisive 6-1, 6-1 victory on the tournament's opening day, hosted by MSLTA in collaboration with AITA and PMDTA at the Mhalunge Balewadi Tennis Complex.
"It was truly emotional representing my country in my debut match. I felt a surge of emotions on the court, but I managed myself well. The encouragement from my teammates and the crowd's support for every point was crucial in helping me succeed today," Shrivalli shared.
"I focused on each point, striving to give my all while keeping my country in mind," she added.
As her match concluded, Shrivalli expressed her feelings, saying, "The moment I embraced my teammates after the win was surreal. Although we are individual players, we came together as a team, and our bonding over the past week has been remarkable and exhilarating. I truly cherished the atmosphere here," she remarked.
She also highlighted the camaraderie off the court, stating, "We've engaged in various fun activities, playing games, and getting to know one another better. I believe we have developed a great understanding of each other, and our cheerful spirit has contributed to our performance," she said.
The Indian squad for this year’s Billie Jean King Cup features a vibrant mix of seasoned athletes like Prarthana Thombare and Ankita Raina, alongside young talents like Maaya Rajeshwaran.
Discussing the team dynamics, Shrivalli remarked, "The senior players have been incredibly supportive, sharing their experiences of representing the country over the years. They guide us on what to focus on and help keep us calm before matches, which has been invaluable. Additionally, having Maaya on the team provides an extra boost to us."
Shrivalli also noted that the court conditions might play to Team India’s advantage. "The courts are slightly faster and bouncier, which we all enjoy playing on. Furthermore, the hot weather seems to favor us," she concluded.
