Chennai, March 24 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu expressed admiration for MS Dhoni’s enduring performance following the ex-CSK captain's swift stumping during their IPL 2025 opening match against Mumbai Indians. Sidhu boldly asserted that Dhoni could still achieve a half-century for CSK at the age of 50.
Dhoni executed a brilliant stumping of Suryakumar Yadav when the MI captain misjudged Noor Ahmed's googly. Dhoni's quick reflexes allowed him to collect the ball and dislodge the bails in his classic style, marking his 44th stumping in IPL history.
"At 43 years old, he remains unmatched. He is like fine wine, improving with age. Just look at his fitness level. A wicketkeeper’s longevity hinges on it, and Dhoni’s technique, along with his smooth execution, is exceptional. The respect he has garnered over the years is simply phenomenal," Sidhu stated on JioHotstar.
Following CSK's victory, Dhoni showcased sportsmanship by shaking hands with the opposing players. He also offered encouragement to Vignesh Puthur, a 24-year-old spinner making his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians.
"It was a beautiful and heartwarming moment when he approached young Vignesh, offered a pat on the back, and motivated him. That type of encouragement acts like premium fuel, empowering a player to tackle life's most significant challenges. Dhoni has undoubtedly touched many hearts," Sidhu remarked.
Dhoni, turning 44 in July, is competing in his 18th consecutive IPL season, with 16 of those seasons representing CSK. To date, he has participated in 264 matches, accumulating 5243 runs, ranking him sixth on the all-time run leaderboard, with 24 half-centuries.
Commending Dhoni's fitness, Sidhu concluded, "He has nothing left to prove, yet fans are reluctant to see him retire. I would wager my life that he might be the only cricketer capable of scoring a half-century for Chennai Super Kings at 50!"
In the match, Rachin Ravindra and Ruturaj Gaikwad both achieved half-centuries, leading CSK to a 4-wicket triumph over MI at Chepauk on Sunday.
Ravindra played a pivotal role, scoring 65 runs off 45 balls and sealing the victory with a massive six off Mitchell Santner on the first delivery of the final over, despite wickets tumbling at the other end.
New Zealand cricketing icon Kane Williamson shared his thoughts on Rachin Ravindra's performance, stating, "His contribution was vital, particularly in the partnerships he developed. Ruturaj was fluent, striking at 200 on a challenging pitch. However, Rachin Ravindra demonstrated the skill and composure necessary on this wicket.
"He anchored the innings and guided his team to victory, which was fantastic to witness and provided a clear strategy for Chennai at home."
