New Delhi, May 11 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu has raised concerns about the timing of Virat Kohli's announced plans to retire from Test cricket just before the highly anticipated five-match Test series in England, commencing June 20.
Sources affiliated with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) indicate that the 36-year-old cricketing icon has recently expressed his desire to withdraw from the longest format of the sport.
Nonetheless, the BCCI remains hopeful. Insiders report that they are actively attempting to persuade Kohli to reconsider, particularly as the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle is set to kick off with the England tour.
“Virat Kohli’s announcement regarding his retirement has caused a significant buzz in the cricketing community. While his reasons are admirable, advocating for change in the sport, the timing is not ideal as India's prestige is at stake,” Sidhu remarked in a video shared on his X account.
“We are about to embark on a tour that poses the toughest challenge for any Test-playing nation,” he emphasized.
The seasoned player characterized Kohli as India's “knight in shining armour in England,” noting that his departure would leave the Men in Blue lacking experience, especially with Rohit Sharma having already stepped back from Test cricket.
“I assert that Kohli can be our knight in shining armour in England because of his wealth of experience, particularly after Rohit Sharma’s exit. We cannot field an inexperienced squad in England,” Sidhu elaborated.
Kohli made his Test debut in 2011 and has participated in 123 Tests, amassing 9230 runs with an average of 46.85. He has also captained India in 68 Tests, making him the country's most successful captain in this format. His intensity, fitness, and leadership have reshaped India into a formidable Test team both at home and abroad.
