New Delhi, May 10 (NationPress) The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has enlisted the help of a highly influential cricketing figure to engage with the talismanic batter in the upcoming days in hopes of persuading him to reconsider his intentions of retiring from Test cricket.
Reports from IANS on Saturday indicated that Kohli has expressed his desire to step back from Test cricket ahead of the crucial five-match series in England, commencing on June 20. The BCCI has urged Kohli to reassess his decision, highlighting the significance of upcoming challenges in this format, particularly the England tour.
“Indeed, to sway Virat Kohli to reconsider his possible retirement from Test cricket, the BCCI has reached out to a notable cricketing figure to talk to the star player soon, emphasizing the importance of extending his career in this format, especially with the England tour approaching,” sources informed IANS.
India’s Test series in England marks the initiation of a new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Initially, there were concerns about Kohli's participation in the England tour, but it has come to light that he is contemplating leaving a format he has always cherished, as evidenced by his vocal sentiments while captaining India in 68 Tests.
The influential figure had also previously spoken to Rohit Sharma, although that was in a different context, as Rohit later announced his retirement from Tests.
“Kohli is known for being resolute in his decisions, but the insights from this prominent cricketing figure might impact his reflections on his Test cricket career,” sources added.
Since his debut in 2011, Kohli has participated in 123 Tests, accumulating 9230 runs at an average of 46.85. Should Kohli proceed with his retirement plans, India would find themselves lacking experience in their Test squad for the England tour, missing both him and Rohit.
With Rohit’s exit, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill would become the most seasoned top-order batters. In Kohli's potential absence, Rishabh Pant would be the most experienced player in the middle order. Gill has been strongly mentioned as a leading candidate for the next Test captaincy, alongside Rahul, Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah.
Both Kohli and Rohit announced their retirements from T20Is after India’s victory in the Men's T20 World Cup in Barbados last year. If Kohli decides to retire from Tests, the veteran pair will only be available for India in ODI formats.
Meanwhile, IANS has learned that the India ‘A’ squad for the England tour is expected to be finalized by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee soon. The India ‘A’ team will participate in three four-day matches against the England Lions, starting on May 30 in Canterbury.
