Sylhet, April 18 (NationPress) Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons has emphasized the necessity of developing “proper wickets” instead of spin-dominated surfaces as the national squad embarks on a significant phase in Test cricket. With a two-match home series against Zimbabwe set to commence on April 20 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Simmons highlighted that the aim is to prioritize long-term growth over immediate outcomes.

"Our objective is to create proper wickets and attempt to play in a manner that aligns with our vision for the Test team," Simmons remarked on Friday. "There is no requirement to construct a spin-friendly track. Discussions about spin or seam tracks are non-existent. The pitch appears solid and genuinely appealing."

The upcoming series is regarded as the beginning of a new chapter for Bangladesh Test cricket. As the renowned 'fabulous five' gradually step back, only Mushfiqur Rahim remains a consistent presence in the red-ball format. Having played 94 Tests, Mushfiqur is anticipated to retire upon reaching the milestone of 100 matches.

"I must acknowledge that he [Mushfiqur] has contributed immensely to Bangladesh cricket. Both he and Mahmudullah have been invaluable to our team," Simmons stated. "He epitomizes professionalism. He aims to excel and is focusing on maintaining peak form. His performance against Zimbabwe has been remarkable. Let's ensure he achieves his goals in this Test."

Simmons lauded the training facilities in Sylhet, remarking, "Preparation has been commendable. The amenities are akin to a dream. We have accomplished a lot in a brief period."

Regarding the challenge posed by Zimbabwe, Simmons recognized the threat from fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani. "He poses a challenge to any team globally. His height provides him with unique advantages. Many players have faced him in franchise cricket before and are strategizing on how to play against him."

Simmons also advocated for a methodical approach: "I'm not contemplating a whitewash. We will take things step by step. Winning the first Test is our priority, and then we can discuss winning the series."

Addressing concerns about the absence of a left-arm fast bowler, he stated, "As long as we have two to three high-quality right-arm pace bowlers, we are content. Nahid Rana possesses the speed that many fast bowlers yearn for. If he bowls in the right areas, he will certainly challenge the batters."

Reflecting on the overall journey of Bangladesh's red-ball cricket, Simmons shared, "Since 2005, there has been significant progress. However, further improvement is necessary to reach their aspirations of being among the top three teams."

The second Test is scheduled to be played in Chattogram on April 28.
