Sylhet, April 17 (NationPress) Zimbabwe has commenced its preparations for the forthcoming Test series against Bangladesh with their initial training session at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Thursday, even though rain caused delays and necessitated an early conclusion to the day’s activities.
“It’s unfortunate, but obviously these things are beyond our control. I’m pleased with the preparation we had in Harare. We enjoyed four productive days of regional games there, so the players are coming off a good amount of game time. We prepared for all potential conditions during our time in Harare – that was quite beneficial,” stated head coach Justin Sammons on Thursday.
Sammons commended the players’ mindset during the limited practice time they had, especially after enduring consecutive travel days. “As I mentioned, it’s unfortunate, but the guys are in high spirits. They’ve had some quality time together in the changeroom after two exhausting travel days. So, I’m satisfied with the current state of the group,” he added.
Only four members of the touring squad – captain Craig Ervine, Sean Williams, Wellington Masakadza, and Victor Nyauchi – have prior experience playing Test cricket in Bangladesh. For the remaining players, the series against Bangladesh, commencing on April 20 in Sylhet and followed by the second match at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram starting on April 28, presents a fresh challenge and an excellent learning opportunity.
“This will be a significant learning experience for the team. For most players, this is their first time playing in whites here. The crucial thing is to absorb the lessons from this experience and evolve as cricketers. Each time we enter a series, our aim is to win, and that remains unchanged here. We firmly believe we possess a squad capable of truly competing and bringing the series victory back to Zimbabwe,” Sammons concluded.
Zimbabwe and Bangladesh last faced each other in a Test match in July 2021, where Bangladesh emerged victorious by 220 runs in Harare. The last Test match Zimbabwe played in Bangladesh was in February 2020, with the hosts achieving a comprehensive win by an innings and 106 runs.
