New Delhi, April 21 (NationPress) Simranpreet Kaur Brar achieved a milestone by securing India's first senior international medal, winning an impressive silver medal in the women’s 25m pistol event at the Las Palmas shooting range in Lima, Peru, on the final day of the second leg of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup circuit.
The Indian shooter recorded a total of 33 hits in the 10-series final consisting of five rapid-fire shots, finishing just one hit behind China’s Sun Yujie, who claimed her second consecutive world cup gold in this category. Another Chinese competitor, Yao Qianxun, earned the bronze medal with 29 hits.
Earlier in the day, the trio of double Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker, mixed team pistol world champion Esha Singh, and Simranpreet ensured that all three Indians advanced to the finals.
Manu qualified second with an impressive score of 585 while Simranpreet ranked fifth with 580. Esha Singh, who had previously secured silver in the event at the Argentina World Cup, achieved a score of 575 to clinch the eighth and final qualifying position.
The three Chinese competitors also progressed to the finals alongside German star Doreen Vennekamp and multiple continental champion Andrea Perez Pena.
The Chinese shooters took an early lead, occupying the top three positions after the first series, while the Indian shooters gradually found their rhythm starting from the second series. Simran shot a four in the second series, Esha a five in the third, and after the sixth series, both Manu and Simranpreet scored fives while Esha scored a four, prompting the first shoot-off to determine the standings among Manu, Esha, and Doreen.
Esha was unable to continue past this point, and Manu subsequently won another shoot-off in the following series, relegating Doreen to fifth place. By this stage, Simranpreet had 23 hits, placing her between Sun with 25 hits and Yao with 22.
Manu’s fortune changed in the next series, maintaining a one-point gap between the top three competitors until the match concluded.
This marks India’s fourth silver medal in the competition, adding to their collection of two golds and one bronze.
