New Delhi, Sep 29 (NationPress) India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav addressed the Asia Cup trophy controversy after their five-wicket victory over Pakistan in the final. He highlighted that the team's primary aim was to play exceptional cricket and secure wins. He stressed that the significance of receiving the trophy was minor, stating that the true reward lies in witnessing the smiling faces of people back home.
Following their victory against Pakistan, the Indian team declined to accept the Asia Cup trophy during the presentation ceremony from ACC chief Naqvi, who also holds the positions of chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Asian Cricket Council, and Pakistan’s Interior Minister.
As the presentation commenced after a 90-minute delay, Indian players Kuldeep Yadav, Abhishek Sharma, and Tilak Varma received their individual accolades from other dignitaries. When Naqvi approached the stage, the Indian team signaled their refusal to accept the trophy from him. Shortly after, the trophy was taken away, leaving the champions without their accolade.
In an interview with NDTV, Suryakumar reflected on the incident, stating, "It spoke volumes. Our primary focus was to win matches and play good cricket. Whether the trophy was awarded or not is irrelevant. The smiles on the faces of our people back home are our true trophy."
He added, "What truly matters is that my country is elated and we are celebrating. We have billboards bearing our names as Asia Cup champions. What more could we ask for?"
This victory marked India's third triumph over Pakistan within a span of just 15 days, a feat never achieved before by any Indian captain. Suryakumar described it as "destined" to occur.
"Winning 3-0 was remarkable. The boys displayed an incredible performance. They fulfilled my expectations. All the discussions we've had in this team room have paid off, and I am truly pleased. Never before have we faced them three times in a single tournament. It was meant to be," the Indian skipper stated.
Regarding how he handles provocative actions from opponents, Suryakumar mentioned, "I believe there is a distinction between the two sides. None of us have ever displayed inappropriate gestures; we aimed to play this game with dignity. We wanted to make a positive statement while showcasing a good brand of cricket, regardless of the outcome — which can swing either way."
He continued, "After the match, discussions should evoke happiness, knowing they have given their utmost effort on the field. I keep reminding my boys not to stray from the game. Focus on the situation and the game while setting emotions aside," he concluded.
