Hyderabad, Dec 8 (NationPress) Baroda's wicketkeeper-batter Amit Passi has matched the world record for the highest score on a T20 debut by scoring a remarkable 44-ball century during their final league match in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on Monday.
At the age of 26, he amassed a stunning 114 runs off merely 55 balls, which included 10 fours and 9 sixes, propelling Baroda to a 13-run victory against Services. This impressive performance ties him with Pakistan’s Bilal Asif, who scored 114 runs from 48 balls for the Sialkot Stallions in a domestic T20 game in Faisalabad back in May 2015, setting the world record for the highest individual score in a men’s T20 debut.
Passi now stands as the third Indian batter to score a century on T20 debut, joining the ranks of Shivam Bhambri from Punjab and Akshath Reddy from Hyderabad, with all three centuries being achieved in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Filling in for Indian wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma, who is on national duty against South Africa, Passi opened the batting and showcased an explosive performance against Services.
He forged crucial partnerships, including a 60-run stand for the third wicket with Shivalik Sharma, followed by a swift 75-run partnership with captain Vishnu Solanki in just 32 balls, significantly contributing to Baroda's total of 220/5 in 20 overs.
In reply, Services started strong with Kunwar Pathak (51), Ravi Chauhan (51), and Mohit Ahlawat (41), but ultimately fell short at 207-8, losing by 13 runs.
Despite this victory, Baroda remains out of the Super League stage contention in a challenging Elite Group C.
The outcomes of the matches between Punjab-Gujarat and Bengal-Haryana will determine which teams progress from their respective groups.
In the first innings, Haryana set a target of 191 runs for Gujarat, bolstered by efforts from captain Ankit Kumar (46 off 30) and Nishant Sindhu (48 off 31).
