Will Smith steer Australia with an all-pace attack in the MCG Test?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Melbourne, Dec 25 (NationPress) In a strategic move, Australian stand-in captain Steve Smith has chosen to deploy an all-pace bowling lineup for the fourth Ashes Test against England, as the hosts continue to finalize their Playing XI.
Smith revealed the final 12 players for the upcoming Test following Australia's last training session on Thursday. He mentioned that selectors would re-evaluate the MCG pitch on Friday morning before confirming the pace bowlers, with Michael Neser, Brendan Doggett, and returning speedster Jhye Richardson competing for the last two spots.
"We’ve settled on a 12; we just want to inspect the wicket tomorrow. We’re set to play four seamers and no spinner. The surface has about 10mm of grass, looking rather green and lush," Smith stated.
"I anticipate it will provide significant assistance, especially on day one, given that the conditions are similar to today—quite chilly and overcast, which should lead to considerable movement," Smith told the press on Thursday morning.
"You have to adapt to the surface you're given; this one seems tailored for the seam bowlers, and the weather forecast for the week supports that as well.
"If Nathan Lyon were available, we might still have this same discussion, so it’s certainly not a reflection on Todd’s abilities,” he added.
If chosen, Richardson will be making his return after a four-year hiatus from Test cricket, with his last match in the national red-ball team occurring in December 2021.
"It’s thrilling to see Richardson back in the mix after a lengthy injury absence. We know the talent he possesses, particularly against England in the Ashes. He has showcased exceptional performance at this level before," Smith remarked.
Reserve wicketkeeper Josh Inglis will be omitted to allow for Smith's return, who missed the previous Adelaide Test due to a vestibular illness, while captain Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon remain sidelined due to injuries.
“I’m feeling significantly better than last week. I had a challenging few days prior to the Test, but my vestibular issues have calmed down.
“I’m now feeling completely fit. It was disappointing to miss that match. The wicket looked quite favorable for batting, and I found myself wishing I could be out there, but it was the right decision at that time as I was struggling,” Smith expressed.
Smith also confirmed that veteran Usman Khawaja and wicketkeeper Alex Carey will bat at numbers 5 and 6, respectively, with all-rounder Cameron Green moving down to No. 7.
Australia's lineup for the fourth Test includes: Travis Head, Jake Weatherald, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith (c), Usman Khawaja, Alex Carey (wk), Cameron Green, Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland, Brendan Doggett, Michael Neser, Jhye Richardson.
