Melbourne, Dec 25 (NationPress) Australian stand-in captain Steve Smith has chosen to utilize an all-pace strategy for the fourth Ashes Test against England, while the home team is still finalizing their Playing XI.
Following Australia's final training session on Thursday, Smith revealed the 12-man squad for the fourth Test. He indicated that selectors would reevaluate the MCG pitch, described as “quite furry,” on Friday morning to finalize the pace lineup. Michael Neser, Brendan Doggett, and returning pace bowler Jhye Richardson are competing for the last two spots.
"We've settled on a 12, but we want to assess the wicket again tomorrow. We're fielding four quicks and no spinner. The pitch has 10mm of grass—quite furry and green," Smith stated.
"I expect it to provide considerable movement, especially on day one, which mirrors today's cold and overcast conditions," Smith informed reporters on Thursday morning.
"You have to adapt to the surface presented; this one seems set to aid the seam bowlers, and the weather forecast supports that throughout the week as well.
"Even if Nathan Lyon were available, we would likely still be discussing this approach, so it's not a reflection on Todd's abilities," he added.
If chosen, Richardson will mark his return to Test cricket after a four-year hiatus, with his last appearance in December 2021.
"It's thrilling to see Richardson back in contention after a long injury layoff. He has proven his skills against England in prior Ashes series. We've witnessed his outstanding performance when given the chance at this level," Smith remarked.
Reserve wicketkeeper Josh Inglis will be omitted to accommodate Smith, who missed last week’s Adelaide Test due to a vestibular illness. Meanwhile, captain Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon remain sidelined due to injuries.
“I’m feeling significantly better than last week. I had a rough few days leading up to the Test and during the initial days. Fortunately, my vestibular issues have resolved.
“I feel completely fit now. It was disappointing to miss that Test; it appeared to be an excellent batting wicket. Watching from the hotel those first two days made me wish to be playing, but it was the right decision at the time as I was struggling," Smith shared.
Smith also confirmed that veteran Usman Khawaja and wicketkeeper Alex Carey will bat at numbers 5 and 6, respectively, with all-rounder Cameron Green batting at No. 7.
Australia's XI for the fourth Test includes: Travis Head, Jake Weatherald, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith (c), Usman Khawaja, Alex Carey (wk), Cameron Green, Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland, Brendan Doggett, Michael Neser, Jhye Richardson.
