Wellington, Sep 26 (NationPress) - Former coach Gary Stead has made his comeback to New Zealand Cricket as a high performance coach. His primary role will be to enhance player and coach development along with overseeing high performance programs.
Daryl Gibson, NZC's Chief High Performance Officer, mentioned that Stead's commitment will average three days a week throughout the year.
Having recently wrapped up a remarkable eight-year tenure as the coach of the BlackCaps in June, Stead was also appointed as the head coach of the Indian domestic team Andhra for the upcoming 2025-26 Ranji Trophy. This role will allow him to further develop his coaching skills beyond NZC.
“Gary is permitted to pursue opportunities outside of NZC, including his recent part-time role with Andhra in their four-day competition, which will enrich his knowledge and experience,” Gibson stated.
Stead, who provided interim coaching support to Otago Cricket during the winter pre-season, has already participated in a New Zealand under-19 camp this month. He expressed a strong commitment to advancing cricket in New Zealand.
“New Zealand cricket has been a significant part of my life for the past 30 years. Contributing to the game I cherish is truly special,” said Stead.
“I remain passionate about coaching and helping others improve. If I can share some of my insights and experiences to aid the BLACKCAPS and WHITE FERNS in achieving success on the global stage, that would be immensely fulfilling.”
Stead expressed gratitude to NZC for allowing him the flexibility to work outside the organization. “I also appreciate the chance to expand my skills and experiences elsewhere, and I hope to bring valuable insights back into our cricket environment,” he added.
Since making his first-class debut at 20 in 1991, Stead has been a prominent figure in cricket. He has played over 100 first-class and List A matches for Canterbury, many of which he captained, and has represented New Zealand in five Tests.
Stead's coaching journey began with NZC as a coach development manager (2004-09), transitioned to an assistant coach at the NZC Academy (2005-06), and included positions as head coach for the WHITE FERNS (2009-12) and director of cricket at Canterbury (2012-18), before he was appointed to lead the New Zealand men's team in 2018.
