Manav Suthar Calls Rashid Khan the Top T20 Bowler, Shares Learning Experience
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 15 (NationPress) Manav Suthar, a left-arm spin bowling all-rounder for Gujarat Titans, has hailed Afghanistan's Rashid Khan as the 'top T20 bowler globally', stating that acquiring knowledge from him during the IPL has been a pivotal moment in his cricketing journey.
"I can honestly say it has been an exceptional learning opportunity. He is the finest T20 bowler in the world and recently reached the milestone of 1000 wickets in this format. There’s no greater legend in T20 cricket than him. Practicing alongside him and discussing strategies has been incredibly enlightening.
"He emphasizes the importance of simplicity in bowling; the more straightforward your approach, the more effective it is. Maintaining consistent delivery is crucial. It feels amazing to observe and learn from him while I bowl side by side," Suthar shared in an exclusive interview with IANS on Wednesday, arranged by the team.
Rashid's mastery was evident when he demonstrated fundamental bowling principles, taking 3-17 in GT's nail-biting one-run victory against Delhi Capitals earlier this month. According to Suthar, the camaraderie with Rashid extends well beyond cricket. "I undoubtedly share a strong rapport with Rashid bhai. He possesses a wonderful character and interacts warmly with everyone. He takes the time to explain things thoroughly, which has fostered a great relationship between us," he noted.
Suthar mentioned that the supportive atmosphere within the GT spin group, which includes Jayant Yadav, Washington Sundar, and R Sai Kishore, has created a family-like environment. "I maintain excellent relationships with everyone - including Jayant bhai, Saiki, and Washi. We are always willing to support one another, embodying the essence of family," he expressed.
This collective spirit has contributed to GT's promising start this season, with the IPL 2022 champions securing consecutive victories following earlier defeats. "Our morale is undoubtedly high. We have won two matches in a row, and we are feeling very positive. Our focus is to keep our approach straightforward," he added.
Reflecting on how the IPL experience has influenced him as a bowler, Suthar, who debuted in the tournament in 2024, stated that facing elite batsmen consistently has significantly accelerated his development.
"It has transformed my game tremendously. Every day, bowling to world-class batsmen teaches me something new. I improve progressively through these encounters. Thus, it has made a substantial impact on my growth," he shared.
The packed schedule between last year's IPL and the current season, which included matches against Australia A, South Africa A, T20 World Cup warm-ups, and a complete domestic season where he claimed 13 wickets in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, has further enhanced Suthar's capabilities.
"It's been a rewarding journey. During the gap between the last and this IPL, I participated in matches against Australia A, South Africa A, T20 World Cup warm-ups, one-day series, and the domestic season. It's been incredibly beneficial," Suthar remarked.
Even during prolonged periods without game time, Suthar remained undeterred. Although he was part of GT in IPL 2025, went on the England tour with India A, and was included in the Central Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy, he didn’t play until he took eight wickets in the second four-day match against Australia A in Lucknow.
It’s evident why Suthar attributes much of his career advancement to the GT setup, transitioning from a support bowler to a core team member. "Being with GT has had a considerable impact on my development. As you noted, I began as a support bowler before becoming a primary squad member. Bowling to quality batsmen allows you to grasp their mindset and approach, which enhances your game tremendously.
"There is significant improvement in your skills through this experience. Since joining this framework, I have evolved considerably. Bowling to world-class batsmen undoubtedly helps you learn immensely. So GT has played a crucial role in my growth," he added.
On managing the demands of a year-round cricket calendar, Suthar emphasized the importance of fitness in adapting to different formats swiftly. "Fitness is essential for year-round cricket, given the numerous matches. My primary focus is to maintain my fitness. Whenever the format shifts, I aim to activate my focus in the initial 3-4 practice sessions, as the format and ball change, and I strive to adapt quickly," he stated.
His personal philosophy remains centered on daily improvement of his strengths—maintaining accuracy in line and length and prioritizing flight over speed.
"My aim is to enhance my strengths continually. I have adhered to this principle since childhood. My emphasis is on improving daily because learning has no age limit. Every time I hit the field, I learn something new. My goal is to refine my skills daily, such as determining which delivery to bowl in various situations," he concluded.
Suthar humorously mentioned that his ability to endure the IPL's sweltering heat is attributed to his upbringing in Sri Ganganagar, one of India's hottest locales. "Indeed, it gets extremely hot in Ganganagar. Temperatures of 50-52 degrees Celsius are easily endured. So, it certainly gives me an edge."
